Obituary, Samuel Bassett
Samuel Bassett, the veteran past City Clerk of Chelsea, is dead at the ripe age of 89. Mr. Bassett was for so many years in office that he was, literally, as much a portion of the city of Chelsea as was its Municipal Government. He was born in the North End of Boston, then the centre of the city's respectability, in November, 1804, was educated in the public schools, and was apprenticed as a sailmaker, later becoming a member of the old firm of Bassett & Thayer. He was a resident of Chelsea from 1838 until quite recently; was made town clerk in 1846 and the first City Clerk in 1847. He resigned in 1884, having held office for 36 years. At one time he was also City Treasurer and Collector, and treasurer of the Chelsea Savings Bank.
He was popularly known as Uncle Sam. He was greatly interested in beautifying Chelsea streets with shade trees, and was one of the "Ornamental Tree Society". His latter days were passed in the home of his son on West Newton Street where he died. He leaves three sons and a daughter.

One of a Thousand: A Series of Biographical Sketches
By John Clark Rand
Samuel Bassett

Samuel Bassett, son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Scott) Bassett, was born in Boston, in November 1804.
He was educated in the Boston public schools; learned the trade of sail-maker, which vocation he afterwards followed on his own account, and as one of the firm of Bassett & Thayer.
Mr. Bassett was married in Westborough, in 1830, to Julia Ann, daughter of Elijah and Hannah Burnap. Of this union were five children: Celadon, Julia A., Clarissa, William S. and Samuel B. Bassett.
Mr. Bassett removed to Chelsea in 1838, where he has ever since resided. He was elected town clerk in 1849, and was annually re-elected til 18957, when the city was organized, and he was elected city clerk, continuing to hold this office till 1884, when he declined re-election. He was also chosen city treasurer and collector, serving until 1875, when he declined further service in that capacity. Seldom has a public officer held such positions for so many years, or been so much beloved. His face had so long been a familiar one at the City Hall that it seemed an indispensable feature, and the people and the city government would gladly have continued him in some office connected with city business, had he not modestly but resolutely insisted that younger men should now assume the burdens he had so conscientiously and faithfully borne. His election to the various offices had always been without opposition, and he was often significantly designated as the ?unanimous S.B.?. He was a father to the orphan and a counselor and friend to the widow. Every mayor and member of the city government during his long term of office-holding had reason to be grateful to him for information furnished and for kindly ant thoughtful suggestions.
During the civil war he was an active friend of the soldier and his family. In every position he was a trusted public servant. During ten years he was one of the assessors, and thus became familiar with the value of property, as well as boundaries and titles.
He was the first treasurer of the Chelsea Savings Bank, elected in 1854, serving until his declination in July, 1874, and for many years was one of the trustees. He was an active member and executive officer of the ?Ornamental Tree Society?, which has added so much to the beauty of Chelsea?s streets.
This tribute is inserted here, without the knowledge of Mr. Bassett, as his fellow citizens feel that it is his due that he should appear in, as he has most emphatically been, ?ONE OF A THOUSAND.?

Elmer A. Bassett, formerly captain of an oyster sloop in Bridgeport, recently completed a two-month cruse to Bradenten, Florida, from Massachusetts with his wife in their 38-foot converted Coast Guard boat.
The Bassetts sailed most of the way to Florida in the Intercoastal waterway preferring safety to speed. Their trip started in Boston, led through Block Island Sound, Long Island Sound to the East river, into the Atlantic Ocean and into the intercoastal waterway at Point Pleasant, New Jersey.
Their boat, the “Evelyn R” powered by a 40-horse engine moved them along at a rate of only six or seven knots an hour. The trip could have been made in less than two months but the Bassetts made stops to visit friends on the way and stopped in New Jersey for a ship bottom painting job.
Mr. Bassett’s last trip to Florida was in 1911. He made his first trips there as an able seaman aboard a three-masted schooner, hauling yellow pine timber from Fernandina, Florida to Rhode Island. He was later skipper of 14 to 18 ton oyster sloops and engaged in charter fishing.
Mr. Bassett, who recently celebrated his 70th birthday, plans to stay in Florida and possibly resume his charter fishing business.

IPSWICH, February 16. A little after 6 o?clock this morning Mrs. Bassett, of Canning-lane, off Down-street, North Ipswich, found her husband, Mr. Richard Bassett, dead, hanging by the neck from a rafter of the back verandah.
Mr. Bassett had been suffering from heart trouble for some time, and had been under medical attention. He went to bed fairly early on Wednesday night, and apparently slept well. According to his usual custom, the rose early. When his wife went outside she found him, in his pajamas, hanging by a thin rope from a rafter of the verandah, his feet only a few inches from the ground. A fruit-case near him appeared to have been pushed away from under his feet. Mrs. Bassett called a neighbor, Mr. J. Devon, who took the body down, and called Sergeant M?Coy, of the North Ipswich police. An ambulance officer was also called, and the Government Medical Officer, Dr. Patterson, was brought.

Of Revolutionary Stock (Drawing included)
Career of Harrison S. Moore Who Will Probably
Be Appointed as County Judge of Queens

The people of Flushing will be particularly gratified if Governor Black verifies the rumor now current that he is to appoint Mr. Harrison S. Moore of this place to fill the vacancy in the county judiciary created by the election of County Judge Garretson to the Supreme court bench.
Judge Moore comes of good old Puritan family, all the members of which have been worthy and representative citizens. His grandfather, Josiah Moore, married Miss Alvira Steadman, and farming was his lifelong occupation. Two of his brothers served their country in the war of 1812. Josiah Moore?s father was a soldier in the continental army and served in the revolutionary war. Judge Moore?s grandfather was a native of Braintree, Mass. He moved to Rensselaer country soon after his marriage, and lived there throughout the remainder of his life. Judge Harrison S. Moore?s father, Lewis K. Moore, was married in his native county, but later moved to Orleans county, N.Y., where he cultivated a farm until 1837. Subsequently he moved to Waukesha county, Wis., where he engaged in wheat farming on a large scale until the breaking out of the civil war. Early in the conflict he enlisted in the Twenty-eighth Wisconsin volunteers and served with honor until its close. He died within thirty days after his discharge, at the age of 39 years. Judge Moore?s mother, Lucinda J. Moore, is the daughter of James Bassett of Rensselaer county, who was of French origin. Her great grandfather, for whom her father was named, was a revolutionary soldier and took part also in the anti-rent struggles. The Bassett family is an old, prominent and influential one in this state and country. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis K. Moore were the parents of five children, namely, George W. Moore, Harrison S. Moore, Lewis Moore, who is a minister of the Methodist Episcopal church, Brooklyn; Hazen and Mary Moore.
Harrison S. Moore passed his boyhood in Auburn, N.Y., and in Wisconsin, where he attended the public school. In 1864 he came with his mother to New York. He was graduated from Half Moon academy in Middletown, Saratoga county, in 1868. Four years later he entered the Albany normal school from which he was graduated in 1874. While a teacher at Little Neck, L.I., he began the study of law and was admitted to the bar at Poughkeepsie in 1877. In 1882, after practicing two year at Little Neck he established an office in Flushing, but has resided at Little Neck, where he has a beautiful home, the house being of the colonial style with attractive and beautiful surroundings.
His wife was Miss Mira L. Van Nostrand, a native of Little Neck, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Van Nostrand and a sister of Supervisor David L. Van Nostrand. Two children brighten this ideal home, Lewis Bassett Moore and Elmer William Moore.
Mr. Moore is a member of Cornucopia lodge, No. 5634, F. and A.M., of Flushing and a past senior deacon of that body. He is a deacon in the Reformed Dutch church at Manhasset, an office which he has filled for some years. Active in politics, he has served in the Republican county committee a number of years and has been a delegate to the state conventions at various times. In 1886 he was a candidate for the office of district attorney on the Republican ticket, but was not elected.
Always interested in educational affairs he has served four years as president of the board of education of Little Neck, and to his untiring and vigorous efforts the citizens are indebted for a new school building and greatly improved educational facilities and advantages.
For some years past Mr. Moore was enjoyed a lrage and lucrative law practice. His commanding figure is familiar to all who frequent the various courts of Queens county, and beside his private practice he is counsel for the board of supervisors of Flushing, for the sheriff as well as for the highway commissioners of the town.

Harrison S. Moore, Source unknown

A life of service to his fellow-men drew to a close with the death of Judge Harrison S. Moore, of flushing, Long Island. His passing was mourned by a host of friends, who knew him as a brilliant lawyer, a loyal citizen and a true and steadfast comrade. As a teacher, a judge and an attorney, he acquired and retained the respect and esteem of all with whom he came in contact, and the news of his sudden death brought forth expressions of sincere sympathy from the leading professional organizations of his community.
Judge Moore was born in Waterford, Saratoga County, April 23, 1849, open of the five children of Lewis K. and Lucinda J. (Bassett) Moore, both natives of Rensselaer County. The Moore family was of old Puritan stock, his grandfather, Josiah Moore, being the son of a soldier of the Revolutionary War. Josiah Moore married Alvia Steadman, a native of Braintree, Massachusetts, and he located in Rensselaer County soon after his marriage, passing the remainder of his days there. Two of his brothers took an active part in the War of 1812 and the entire Moore family was more or less engaged in the stirring actions of that period. His son, Lewis K. Moore, the father of Harrison S. Moore of this record, was married in Rensselaer County, subsequently moving to Orleans County, where he farmed until 1857. He then went out to Waukesha, Wisconsin, where he was engaged in wheat farming until the outbreak of the Civil War. He was a strong abolitionist, and in 1862 he enlisted as a private in Company G, of the 28th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. He soon gained the rank of orderly sergeant, and as such served until the conclusion of hostilities. A few months before the close of the war his wife and children removed from Wisconsin to the homes of their relatives in Rensselaer County, where he joined them when peace was declared. He died within thirty days after leaving the army, and was buried in Stillwater County.
The early education of Harrison S. Moore was acquired in public schools of Prospect Hill, Wisconsin, until, in 1864, the family returned to New York State, where he entered the Half Moon Academy, of Middletown, Saratoga County, from which he graduated in 1867. In 1872 he entered the Albany Normal School, graduating in 1874, after which he taught for three years in the schools of Little Neck, Long Island, at the time studying law. In May, 1877, he was admitted to the bar at Poughkeepsie, and from that time he divided his time until 1880, when he opened his office in Little neck and devoted himself entirely to the practice of his chosen profession. In 1882 he located in flushing and quickly gathered around him a clientele which was extensive and remunerative. In 1896 he received his appointment as Judge of the County of Queens from Governor Morton, and in the following year was elected to serve the full term of six years, from 1887 to 1903. Governor Morton also appointed him to serve on the Greater New York Commission, the body which planned the consolidation to the boroughs into the municipality. After serving his term on the bench, Judge Moore returned to the practice of law, and was also very active in local politics, serving as chairman on many of the district committees of the Republican party. He was a prominent factor in the affairs of the Flushing Hospital, and served as president of the board of trustees from 1903 to 1909. Mrs. Moore also was deeply interested in the work of the hospital, and in 1910 she organized the Women's Auxiliary of the Flushing Hospital, of which body she has ever since been a leading member.
On January 23, 1885, Judge Moore married Maria Van Nostrand, daughter of Albert Van Nostrand, the latter a descendant of one of the oldest Dutch families of Long Island. Judge and Mrs. Moore were the parents of two children, as follows: 1. Lewis Bassett, born in 1886, died in 1920. 2. Elmer William, born in 1892, died in 1923.
Judge Moore passed away on February 24, 1928, as a result of a sudden heart seizure. The news of his death came as a great shock to his large circle of friends throughout Greater New York, and resolutions of sympathy and condolence were passed by the leading organizations of the community, including the board of directors of the Flushing United Association, of which he had been a member and one of its most active workers since 1918. Services were held in the Dutch Reformed Church of Flushing, of which he had been an elder and an active worker for over thirty-four years. Interment was at Flushing Cemetery, and the services were attended by representatives of the leading professional and commercial circles of Greater New York.
