Edith McBride Bass
April 28, 1932 ? September 5, 2020

Edie/Mom/Granny was born with bells on. She grew up in Lake Forest, Illinois with her parents, the late Walter Paul and Claire Childs McBride, and her siblings, Jean McBride Greene of Lake Forest and John Paul McBride of Snowmass, Colorado. She attended The Bell School in Lake Forest and her high school years were spent at Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut. She then went on to Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. Her formative years were filled with grand opportunities yet she never lost sight of the true meaning of love and kindness.

Edie came to Nashville in 1955 when she married the late Jack M. Bass, Jr. She dove into making life long friends, entertaining and volunteering, all in between raising her six children and driving thousands of miles getting them to their next activity and never forgetting to pick them up. She was quite busy considering her five daughters were born within six years of each other, and her son came along seven years later.

Edie's joie de vivre was all encompassing. She had friends from all over but especially in her Nashville community. She remembered everyone's birthday with a funny card and would always write a thank-you note. She had a photographic memory for people's telephone numbers. One friend wrote, "When you looked in Edie's eyes, you knew she was listening to every word you said, and she made you feel like you were the only person in the world- a rare trait that made everyone she touched feel special. " We are all so lucky to have had Edie in our lives.

When Edie made a commitment to a cause she believed in, she was all in. Her foremost dedication was to The Ensworth School which all of her children and most of her grandchildren attended. She served several terms as a board member beginning in 1964 and she became a Permanent Trustee in 2001. Edie was present at every board meeting, fundraiser, sporting event and music program. She was genuinely interested in childhood education and found it fascinating to watch Ensworth grow and develop into the institution that it is today.

Edie was also devoted to Cheekwood Estate and Gardens. Jane MacLeod,President/CEO of Cheekwood wrote, "Edie was one of Cheekwood's earliest supporters whose membership dates to January 6, 1959, preceding even the public opening of Cheekwood. During her decades of service, she touched Cheekwood in so many ways, from serving as Swan Ball co-chair in 1970 (and many Swan Ball committees thereafter) to active participation in the Garden Club of Nashville with its many contributions to the Howe Garden, and in recent years as an Honorary Trustee who made every effort to attend every meeting. Edie was kind, thoughtful, compassionate, genuine and 100 percent dedicated to Cheekwood. "

Edie was a charter board member of STARS (Students Taking a Right Stand) and served on its board for over 30 years. She also sat on the boards of Planned Parenthood, Alive Hospice, The Cancer Society, Park Center and Miss Porter's School where she was honored with the Daisy Pin, the school's highest award for volunteer service. She received countless recognitions for her loyal support. Edie was a founding co-chair of Once in A Blue Moon for the Land Trust of Tennessee and co- chaired The Symphony Ball and The MS Gala. She was a congregant of First Presbyterian Church, a member of the Garden Club of Nashville (50 years) and the Deer Park Garden Club.

Edie is preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Claire McBride Bass and she is survived by her loving children, Leslie McKinney Bass, Meredith Bass Nelson (Charles), Lisa Bass Foote, Jean Maddin Bass and Jack Maddin Bass III. She was adored by her grandchildren, Richard Sutton Bull, IV, Wilkes McKinney Bull, Charles Nelson IV, Maddin McBride Nelson, Douglass Gordon Foote III, Spencer Clifton Foote, Mason Bass Foote, Savannah Rhea Solomon, Jackson Keeler Solomon, Polly McBride Bass, Edith Mercer Bass and Jack Maddin Bass IV.

The family would like to thank Sheila Royster for her loving care and commitment to Mom/Granny as well as Sydnei Bond and Sherron Heyward.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Edie's memory may be made to The Ensworth School, Cheekwood or the charity of one?s choice.

A memorial celebration for Edie will be planned at a later date.

James Orin Bass (1910 ? 2019) (Picture included)

Nashville - James Orin Bass passed away on May 22, 2019. He was born in Hendersonville, TN, on July 12, 1910, to Francis Marion Bass and Sadie Dunn Bass, attended Tarbox elementary school, and graduated from Montgomery Bell Academy in 1928, and the University of the South in 1931. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1934 and returned to Nashville to join Bass, Berry & Sims, the law firm his father had started in 1922 with F. A. Berry and Cecil Sims. He led the firm for many years both in active practice and later as a mentor and loyal supporter of his many younger colleagues.

He was an outstanding lawyer, a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers since 1964, and a former President of the Nashville Bar Association.

He represented Davidson County in the Tennessee House of Representatives 1936-39 and served a term in the Tennessee State Senate 1940-42. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942, graduated from the Command and General Staff School in Leavenworth, Kansas, and served as Judge Advocate on the staff of General Terry Allen, Commander of the 104th Infantry Division, which fought as a part of the U.S. First Army and the First Canadian Army in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. Following VE Day, the 104th was sent to the west coast in preparation for the invasion of Japan, where it had an assigned shipping date when the war ended.

Returning to Nashville following Japan's surrender, he along with his brother, Francis M. Bass, Jr., rejoined Bass, Berry & Sims, helping to guide what was then a six man firm into an era of expansion and growth. The firm is now composed of more than 275 attorneys with offices in Memphis, Knoxville and Washington, D.C., as well as Nashville.

In 1963 Mr. Bass was asked by Mayor Beverly Briley to chair a newly formed Metro Human Relations Committee, a group of community leaders which negotiated the peaceful desegregation of lunch counters and other facilities in Nashville.

Mr. Bass was a loyal, long time member of First Presbyterian Church, which he regularly attended until shortly before his death. As he passed the age of 100, the church service closest to his birthday included an enthusiastic singing of "Happy Birthday Big Jim." He regarded his fellow church members- like the members of his law firm- as family.

As he was to all others, he was to his family as well. Loving and beloved, he set a wonderful example of excellence and gentleness to be followed.

Mr. Bass married the former Susanne Warner in 1937 and they enjoyed a devoted and blessed life together until her death in 2000.

He was predeceased by his brother, Francis M. Bass, Jr., and his sister, Mary Blackman Bass Phillips. He is survived by children James Orin Bass, Jr. (Liz), Edwin Warner Bass (Madge), Francis M. Bass II (Allison), and Susan Bass Bowen; grandchildren Nancy B. Cox (Robert), Atlanta, Susanne B. Young (David), James O. Bass III (Candy), E. Warner Bass, Jr., Elizabeth B. Lamar (Howard), John G. Bass (Felicia), Margaret B. Tyler (Bo), Francis M. Bass III (Trisha), Caroline Carter Bass, James N. Bowen (Laura), and J. Scott Bowen, Jr. (Amanda), Signal Mountain; 27 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild; and by nieces Ann Phillips Harmer and Milbrey Waller Andrews.

The family extends sincere gratitude to caregivers Mary Akhtarhavari, Ruth Keesee and Betty Montgomery.

A funeral service in celebration of Mr. Bass's life will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 4815 Franklin Road, on May 30, 2019 at 2:00 p.m., preceded by a visitation beginning at noon in the church's Courtenay Lounge, and followed by burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Friends of Warner Parks, 50 Vaughn Road, Nashville, TN 37221; Montgomery Bell Academy, 4001 Harding Road, Nashville, TN 37205; University of the South, 735 University Avenue, Sewanee, TN 37383; First Presbyterian Church, 4815 Franklin Pike, Nashville, TN 37220.

LYMAN F. BASSETT
COMMEMORATIVE BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD
Lyman F. Bassett, deceased, a leading agriculturist of Hamden, was a native of New Haven county, born in the town of North Haven, Feb. 27, 1827, and was a worthy representative of one of its honored and highly respected families. His father, Jared Bassett, was born upon the same farm in 1801, and it was also the birthplace of the grandfather, Eli Bassett. His great-grandfather Bassett died in New York during the Revolutionary War.
Jared Bassett spent his entire life upon the old homestead in North Haven, and followed the occupation of farming with marked success. He took quite an active and prominent part in local politics and was honored with several offices, including those of selectman and assessor. He died in 1892, at the advanced age of ninety-one years. For his first wife he married Miss Polly Fenn, of Plymouth, Conn., and to them were born five children,, of whom our subject was the eldest: David, born in 1829, died in 1893; Eli died at the age of eighteen years; Aaron is a resident of North Haven; and Jared lives on the old homestead in that town. After the death of the mother of these children, the father married her sister, Miss Thankful Fenn, and for his third wife wedded Mrs. Laura (Button) Foote.
During his boyhood, Lyman F. Bassett attended the common schools and academy of North Haven, where he acquired a good practical education. He assisted in the operation of the home farm until eighteen years of age, and then turned his attention to the butcher business, which he followed in North Haven at intervals for thirty years. He continued to reside upon the old homestead until 1873, when he removed to the farm of twelve acres in Hamden, upon which he last resided, having retired from the butcher business about 1892. This business he had carried on in Hamden at different times as his health permitted.
On Sept. 14, 1858, Mr. Bassett was married to Miss Emily J. Pierpont, of Waterbury, Conn., who was born Jan. 25, 1832. a daughter of Luther and Delia M. (Waugh) Pierpont, natives of Waterbury and Litchfield, respectively. The father, who was an extensive farmer and highly esteemed man, died at the age of seventy-seven years. In his family were seven children: William H., James E., Chloe M., Emily C., Jane A., Henry S., and Emily J., all now deceased with the exception of Mrs. Bassett. Mr. Bassett held membership in the Congregational Church of North Haven since 1868, as has also his wife, and he took an active interest in everything tending to advance the moral, intellectual or material welfare of the town or community. While a resident of North Haven, Mr. Bassett served as justice of the peace for two years, and also filled the office of assessor in a most creditable and acceptable manner. He died July 9, 1901, and was buried at North Haven.

Bill Bassett
History of Park County, Montana 1984
Hattie and Mrs. Bassett moved up to the Papesh Place with Fred. One winter day they took a team and buggy and went to visit Bill. A big spring at the lower end of the Papesh Place had laid down a sheet of ice across the road. One of the horses slipped and fell, causing the wagon to lurch, throwing Mrs. Bassett on her head on the frozen ground. They righted things, and Mrs. Bassett appeared OK. They continued on to Bassett Creek. Betty prepared tea for them, and Mrs. Bassett proceeded to put spoonful after spoonful of sugar in her tea. That was the first indication that her head had been injured, but from that time on she was never in good mental health. When Hattie married Harry Bray, she moved to the deer Lodge area and took her mother with her. Mrs. Bassett died not long after the move at Warm Springs.
Fred worked at the Goffner Sawmill, above the Taylor Place in Mol Heron Creek, and became acquainted with Cinnabar Basin. He moved to the Basin around 1895, and settled where Al and Judy Jensen now live (on the Sargent Ranch). On Nov. 26, 1897, he married Leah Smith, whose family lived on the place which was later proved up on by the Hesit family. (He was 34 and she was 21.) Their first daughter, Florence, was born Sept. 22, 1898.
So for around ten years, the two Bassett families lived on opposite sides of the Yellowstone River. To visit each other or to trade work, they had to cross the river at a ford just above the present Corwin Bridge. Florence can even remember them hauling a threshing machine across the ford. She also recalls one time when her family went to visit Bill and Betty. They took a team and buggy. One of the horses was a mare which had a foal, which they allowed to tag along, as they were to be gone overnight. The river was high, and when the team plunged into the water at the ford, the colt swam ahead of the team and became lodged between the horses, under the tongue. Fred had to crawl out onto the tongue to push the colt forward and around in front of the team to prevent it from drowning.
Bill and Betty ranched on Bassett Creek for a number of years. Their children were Harvey (Ethel Rigler's father), Lester, Shelby, Nellie (who died when she was 8-12 years old, and is buried in the Gardiner Cemetery), Nora (who married Bill Jones), and Wildie (born about 1905). At a time when buffalo were near extinction, buffalo were a problem on this ranch, especially in the spring. On any given day, a person could round a corner of the barn while doing chores, and run into a cantankerous old bull. The bulls were known to breed their cows, and they had some hybrid calves. So they tried to run the animals off, with varying success.
In 1908, Bill sold the Bassett Creek place to the group which built the Corwin Springs Hotel and Plunge in 1909. The existing Corwin Bridge was built at that time. Subsequently, Betty operated a boarding house on Main Street in Livingston, and Bill set up a blacksmith shop in Fishtail. They are both buried at Fishtail. (After Bill died, in her later years, Betty married S.M. Fitzgerald, the man who originally led the Bassett family to Montana.)

Phillip Bassett
History of Park County, Montana 1984
Phillip Bassett and Mary Berry were married in Connecticut. They moved to California by covered wagon in the early 1860's. They farmed in the Red Bluff area, where he also worked as an architect. They raised seven children: Bill, Wayne, Charlie, George (Gene?), Hattie, Fred, and Abbie (in order). By the time the family was grown, Phillip and Mary had a fine home in Oakland.
In 1880, S.M. Fitzgerald was promoting a horse concession in Yellowstone Park. He made a trip to California to purchase horses. Bill Bassett signed on with him to drive 50 to 75 head back to Yellowstone. When the horses were delivered, Bill found work with the Mulherin family. They lived at the mouth of Mol Heron (Mulherin) Creek (near the current Trestle Ranch buildings, but down on the creek).
Fred came to Montana around 1881 (when he was 18). He built the little stone house at the head of Yankee Jim Canyon that was removed during recent highway construction. Shortly thereafter he settled at the mouth of Bassett Creek and established squatter's rights. In the meantime, Bill had married a Mulherine girl (Betty) and had started a family. So Fred traded his rights on Bassett Creek to his older brother for two saddle horses. When the Valley was surveyed, Bill filed on the homestead. At about this time, Phillip and Mary sold their home and moved to the Bassett Creek place with their daughter Hattie, where they lived with Bill and Betty. The ranch house was the current "Ranch Kitchen" restaurant.
Fred worked at various jobs, including hunting, trapping, breaking horses, and freighting from Horr (Electric) to Aldredige. He took squatter's rights on the Papesh Place.
The Upper Yellowstone country didn't meet Phillip's high expectations. He grew despondent, and committed suicide by taking poison in early May, 1884. He was buried in the cemetery at Mammoth.

Death of Mr. John Bass

A telegram was received last Tuesday morning, March 8th, by Mrs. Margaret Bass, announcing the sad news of the death of her son Johnny, which occurred on Monday afternoon, March 7th, about 5 o?clock, while in the discharge of his duties as fireman on the Southern Rialroad near Chatttanooga, Tennessee. It seems that the coupling between the engine and tender broke, or came loose, when the engine in its sudden das forward caused him to lose his balance, when he was hurled backwards, falling between the engine and tender directly upon the track, cuasing the mutilation of his lower limbs, so that death was instantaneous.
His body was taken in charge by the Railroad Company, who had it taken to Chattanooga and nicely prepared for burial, placing it in a beautiful casket and forwarding it to Atlanta, from whence it was brought to Abbeville, arriving here over the Seaboard Wednesday morning about one o?clock nad was taken to his home at Sharon, where many friends had gathered to speak words of sympathy and comfort, and do all in their power to assuage the grief of the aged mother, sisters and brothers, who were almost crazed by the sudden shock.
The deceased had been in the employ of this company about six months, and by his fidelity, careful and close attention to his duties, won their esteem and confidence, as well as the respect and good will of all the train crew.
He was warm-hearted, kind and true, and had many friends at home as well as abroad, all of whom mourn his sudden and untimely death, being cut off in the prime and vigor of early manhood, and without a moment?s warning.
His funeral services were conducted a Sharon Church at three o?clock Wednesday afternoon, by Rev. Boulware, after which his remains were interred in Sharon cemetery in the presence of a large company of sympathizing friends. The bereaved family have the sympathy of hosts of friends in their sore affliction.
