William Bassett by Ruth Ishmael

William Bassett was born in St. John's, Canada, in 1864. He was educated in the city of New York and remained with his parents until 1882, when he came to Atoka to work as a clerk for his uncle, Oliver Hebert. Mr. Hebert also had another young man by the name of D.N. Robb in his employment.
In 1885, after the death of his uncle, he married his cousin, Louisiana E. Hebert, a granddaughter of Eliza A. Flack and one-sixteenth Choctaw. He accepted a position as chief clerk in the business of Robb and Blossom and continued for many years in that capacity.
He was the owner of four-hundred acres of good farming land as well as five-hundred head of cattle. He was said to be a young man of great steadiness and sterling social qualities.
Will and Louisiana had four known children: Lillie Claire; Mamie; a son who was born in Atoka on December 13, 1892, died January 9, 1893, and was buried in the Atoka West Vie Cemetery; and Leroy Bassett, born March 15, 1895, died July 27, 1938, and is also buried in West View.
Claire was born May 7, 1886 in Atoka and was married April 3, 1910, in Atoka to William (Will) Munsey Junkapiller. He was born August 10, 1883, at Gravelly Hill, Arkansas, the son of A.B.L. Hunkapiller, a Methodist preacher in Atoka during the early 1900's. It is believed that Clair and Munsey had two children, one of whom was Bill Bassett Hunkapiller. B.B. Hunkapiller was born in Atoka on December 12, 1910, and graduated from Oklahoma University in 1932. He spent thirty years in the Army and Air Force, retiring in 1962, as a Colonel. He and his wife, Frances, reside in Winter Park, Florida, naer their children and grandchildren.
Muncy Hunkapiller was part-owner of a hardward store in Atoka which was located between Hammons Drug and Cates Drug on the north side of Court Street between Ohio and Pennsylvania Avenues, until 1919, when he moved his family to Oklahoma City. He died in Durant on April 20, 1954, and was buried in the West View Cemetery in Atoka.
Claire Bassett died June 26, 1957, in Casselberry, Florida, and was brought back to Atoka to be buried beside her husband.
Mamie Bassett, born in 1888 and died February 22, 1963, was married to Mr. Longtin and lived in Oklahoma City. She is also buried in West View.
On the election of Henry Ward to the office of County Judge, Mr. Bassett was appointed as County Clerk. He was also the third mayor of Atoka, after it was incorporated. Pete Williamson was the first mayor after incorporation.
Will Bassett was very popular and had a host of friends and acquantances in the city of Atoka. His home was the impressive large house, built in 1908, which was used as the Atoka Funeral Home until the new one was built at the west edge of town only a few years ago. He moved from Atoka during World War I and died in Oklahoma City on March 6, 1929. He is buried beside his wife, Louisiana, in West View.

Florida Historic-Dramatic-Contemporary
Family and Personal History, Volume IV
Curry J. Bassett - One of the younger men to have come into prominence in the commercial sphere in Tallahassee is Curry J. Bassett, who is secretary, treasurer and general manager of Bassett Dairies, Inc., a leading milk distributor of the capital city. He has become a conspicous figure among the city's business men. One of Mr. Bassett's particular interests has been Chamber of Commerce activities, and he has held office in two such organizations as well as in the Kiwanis Club. His personality, varied abilities, and present standing among the community's leadership give indication of a career of continuing value to the city.
Curry J. Bassett was born January 21, 1921, and is a native of Monticello, Florida. He received his public school education in that city, after which he was for two years a student at the University of Florida.
Since that time he has been associated with his father in the operation of Bassett Dairies, Inc., one of the concerns with wide recognition and public acceptance in the capital city. Curry J. Basstt familiarized himself thoroughly with its operations, and has merited his position of greater responsibility as secretary and treasurer of the company, and as general manager of the Tallahassee plant of the dairy. Mr. Bassett's interest in the organization has gone beyond the day-to-day aspects of its mangement. Interested in writing, he is compiling a brief "Story of Bassett Dairies, Inc." A particularly valuable and necessary project in view of the fact that this has become one of the leading concerns in its field throughout the state.
Mr. Bassett is a past director of the Kiwanis Club, and continues to take an active part in Kiwanian affairs. He is past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and is now a director of the regular Chamber of Commerce of Tallahassee. While an undergraduate at the University of Florida, he became a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He is communicant of the Presbyterian Church, and serves that congregation as deacon. In his free hours, Mr. Bassett enjoys the out-of-doors, and is particularly fond of fishing.
In Tallahassee, August 21, 1941, Curry J. Bassett married Melvyne Coe, and they are the parents of three children: 1. Curry J. Jr. 2. William Coe 3. Ruby Burt. Mrs. Bassett attended Florida State College for Women, now Florida State University. She is active in the Junior Woman's Club of Tallahassee.
Mr. Bassett's address is 1945 North Monroe Street, Tallahassee.

Born in Chattahoochee on October 26, 1925, he was the only child born to the union of Burryl Albert King and Nora Marie Bassett King. His maternal families were land grant pioneers in Jackson and Gadsden Counties, coming from Bibb County, Georgia in the late 1840's, shortly after Florida became a state. He was related by blood or marriage to many of the families who settled Gadsden County.

Billy graduated from Chattahoochee High School in 1943. He enlisted in the United States Army on March 14, 1945, and served as a chaplain's aide during WWII. He was with the army of occupation in Japan. Following discharge from the army, he enrolled in the University of Florida where he majored in horticulture and music. Billy loved living in Chattahoochee and despite working in Tallahassee for over fifty years, he never moved from the home where he grew up on West Marion Street. Billy loved his friends, his church, music and his garden. He was an accomplished horticulturist and floral designer, and will long be remembered for the glorious floral arrangements he created for so many special occasions in Gadsden County, as well as for state occasions in Tallahassee.
