Sampson Child Killed

NEWTON GROVE ? A four-year-old boy of the Newton Grove section was killed instantly here Friday afternoon when the pickup truck he was riding was rammed from the rear by a loaded dump truck.
Terry Maxton Bass was riding on the back of a pick-up, being driven by his mother, Mrs. Maxton Bass, when she attempted to make a left turn off Highway 192 about seven miles west of here, Sampson County Coroner Coleman Carter said.
Carter said Mrs. Bass? truck was struck fro the rear by a loaded dump truck driven by Edgar T. Carlton, about 35, of Warsaw. The impact threw young Bass from the pick-up and entangled him beneath its wheels, the coroner said.
Carlton told the coroner he was attempting to pass, but that a third vehicle between his truck and Mrs. Bass prevented him seeing turn signals.
Coroner Carter said he planned no inquest unless one was requested by the parties involved.
