Another wedding in which residents of the Dominion will be interested was celebrated on April 10 at St. Mary of the Angles, Bayswater, when Captain John Channon Bassett, son of the late Mr. John Channon Lee Bassett, of Remuera, New Zealand, and Mrs. Bassett, of Newbridge Hill, Bath, was married to Miss Mary Theresa Ford, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Death of Mr. Wm. Smellie Grahame

A private cablegram was received yesterday from London by Mr. John S. Grahame, of Awitu, announcing the death of his father, Mr. William Smellie Grahame, at Richmond, Surrey, England, at the ripe age of 82, having completed his 81st year last month. The deceased gentleman was one of our earliest andmost respected merchants, the firm of ?W.S. Grahame? in the early days being a household word (Mr. Wright being his Sydney partner). Mr. Grahame arrived in Sydney from Scotland in 1838, and arrived in the Bay of Islands in 1839. He returned again to Sydney, and in 1841 came to Auckland, buying the block, on which were afterwards erected Grahame?s stored and residence, at the first Government land sale in Aucklan. The stores fronted the beach, from which was run out Grahame?s wharf, where the cargo boats landed their freight. Mr. Grahame carried on an extensive inter-colonial trade, the well-known brigs Moa and Maukin and other early colonial traders, sailing under his house flag. In 1851 Mr. Grahame greatly enlarged his warehouses, but they were partly burned down in 1856, although, through the heroic efforts of the men of the 58th Regiment, his residence on the Shortland-street frontage was saved.
In 1858 Mr. Grahame and family left for England, and with the excpetion of a flying visit to the colony, he has resided at Richmond, Surrey, ever since. Up to within the last two years, Mr. Grahame was on the London Board of the National Bank of New Zealand, but owing to the infirmities of age he resigned. Mr. Grahame was one of the foundrs of the old St. Andrew?s Presbyterian Church, Alten Road, and took a deep interest in its welfare. The deceased gentleman was noted for his business integrity, and for his high personal reputation. The tidings of his death will be received with feelings of deep regret by all our old colonist who had the pleasure of his acquaintance and friendship. Mr. Grahamhe?s wife pre-deceased him, dying in 1868. He leaves a family of three sons and four daughters, all grown up. There are only two members residing in Auckland, namely, the eldest son, Mr. J. S. Grahame, of Awitu, and the eldest daughter, Mrs. Bassett, wife of Mr. Bsasett, of Remueara.

A wedding of interest to New Zealand readers was that between Mr. W. Grahame Bassett, eldest son of Mr. John Channon Bassett, of Bath, late of Auckland, New Zealnd, and Miss Edith Mary Hunt, youngest daughter of the late Mr. Frederic Treen Hunt, of Worthing, Sussex. The ceremony took place at St. John?s Church, Saskatoon, Canada, and it was performed by the Rev. H.J. Likeman. The date of this marriage was July 23, and the news of its solemnization has just reached England.

Joseph Bassett Dies Suddenly

Joseph Bassett, aged about 75 years and a longtime resident of Newaygo died suddenly of heart trouble last Friday evening. Mr. Bassett, who had been spending the winter with relatives in Petoskey, arrived here on the evening train from the north, and had reached a point in front of the George Turner residence on his way home when stricken. T.C. Parsons and J.L. Herron, who were directly behind him when he fell, hastened to his aid and he was taken to the office of Dr. W.F. Pechuman, where it was found that death had been practically instantaneous.
Mr. Bassett, who is a brother of Oliver Bassett, also of Newaygo, is survived by two sons and two daughters. The remains were taken to Charlevoix for burial beside his wife who died several years ago.

Alwyn Viljoen, The Witness
Former Pietermaritzburg city planner Brian Bassett died on Tuesday night after a long battle with leukaemia.
He was 71. He is survived by his wife Lin and their daughter Catherine, who flew in from Belgium to support her mother at her father’s sickbed.
The death of this genial giant leaves a big hole on the many organisations in which he still served after retiring from the Msunduzi Municipality.
His qualifications from institutions in South Africa and Britain - where he worked and studied with his wife and where their daughter was born in the 1970s - almost filled his business card; and his achievements as community developer, historic building conservation expert, editor, author, art collector and motoring enthusiast would fill this newspaper.
Suffice to say at the Msunduzi council he is best remembered for laying the foundation to conserve Maritzburg’s old buildings, using the expertise gained from serving on the National Monuments Council. In this role he co-compiled and edited The Buildings of Pietermaritzburg as conservation consultant, which to his recent delight is now a very rare and pricey volume cited in research.
Older citizens will, however, recall how this pragmatic city planner made our headlines by mooting in an informal interview to The Witness that the city should follow Durban’s example to consider a red light district in order to create a safer environment for prostitutes.
Ever the philanthropist with a mission to uplift individuals, Brian ironically did his masters in anthropology on the problems of prostitution in urban areas while a rather shy and gangly young student at the University of Cape Town in the 1960s.
In the early 1980s in Durban, Bassett went on to establish the Built Environment Support Group to enable poor communities to access land, basic services, housing and administrative justice, and continued to serve on this group as deputy chairperson after his retirement. He also continued to give unstintingly of his administrative expertise as board member of several charity organisations, from the Msunduzi Hospice to the Zimele non-profit organisation to the Rotarians, where he worked as hard at selling egg and bacon rolls as he did presiding over meetings.
He was constantly adding to his encyclopaedic knowledge of industrial design trends and driving with him through any part of any city was always an education, be it on architectural eras, or the best types of grass to plant on the banks of rivers to stem floods to protect vegetable gardens.
A rally racer in his youth and lover of fast cars all his life, this bon vivant bought an old Ford Mustang and drove the entire Route 66 in the U.S. and as a student toured the Ibiza coastline in Spain decades before these adventures became standard items on bucket lists.
His last hobby was to write as the new car correspondent for Witness Wheels and host the Nqola show on the local radio station Capital 104 fm.
As a driver he taught all us whippersnappers at The Witness how to milk the most out of life each day, and the Wheels team fondly remembers how he took a young man’s delight in pushing his BMW Z4 as fast as he dared around the hairpins of the Hesketh Race Track, despite having 70+ full summers under his belt.
We all say: Hamba kahle mfowethu.
