35855 MRS. LUCINA BASSETT DEAD IN NORMAL
END CAME SHORTLY AFTER NOON
Oct. 30, 1909

Mrs. Lucina J. Bassett, one of the most prominent of the older women of Normal, died at her home at the corner of Fell avenue and First street, yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock. The deceased had been in failing health all the summer and fall, until about three weeks ago, when she rallied and seemed to be gaining her old time strength again. Her daughter, Mrs. Colvin, who came from her home in California the latter part of the summer, when her mother was very low, returned three weeks ago to her home, the prospects being at that time that the mother would hold her strength. The other children were at the bedside when she passed away.
Lucina J. Mead was born in Delaware, O., October 15th, 1831. At an early age she moved with her parents to Greensburgh, Ind. There she resided until her marriage to Brazilla Bassett, March 30th, 1854. Until the time of her marriage, she was a member of the Presbyterian church, the noted J.H. Monfort being for years her pastor. After her marriage, she went with her husband to the Methodist church. She was a faithful member of the latter church to the day of her death, devoted, to all of its best interests. Mrs. Bassett's was a character remarkable for its completeness, it's strength and tenderness. Hers was a nature, spiritual, devoted, loving. She was steadfast in her allegiance to her God, to her family, to her friends. She cherished the ideals of her youth while she grew and ripened with years and had a strong interest in all that passed in the world. She was truly patriotic, wishing for all good to come to her country, her state and to her immediate community. She was broad-minded, yet conservative, having a wonderful fund of information regarding the world's history as it has been made during her life time. She was first of all a home maker, but her tastes were strongly literary. She read widely and with unusual mental grasp, from her early childhood to the close of her life. She was a charter member of the Normal History Club, one of the prominent literary organizations of the city. She bore the distinction of being the oldest member of the club and was one of the foremost and most valued workers, who will be sadly missed. No one could associate with her without gaining an inspiration,
and one left her presence feeling it well worth while to live and to live well, for the sake of the good and the beautiful in life. She was a strong believer in temperance and along with her other work she found time to take an active part for years in the local W.C.T.O.
Soon after her marriage to Mr. Bassett they came west to LaSalle county near Tonica, where they resided on a farm for years and where all of their children were born. The old home farm still remains in the family and is operated by the oldest son, but the family moved to Normal in 1868 to give the younger one the benefit of the schools. During their first year or two here they resided on North School street, until Mr. Bassett erected the present home on South Fell avenue, where they resided ever since. Mr. Bassett passed away August 29th, 1907. One daughter Frances Barzilla, died in infancy and Arthur, the well known musician, passed away January 3rd of the present year. The children who are living are Mrs. Ada E. Colvin, of Pomona, Cal., Ira M. Bassett, who resides on the home farm near Tonica, Ill.; Ellen Irene Bassett, supervisor of music in the Bloomington schools who reside at home, and Prof. Herbert Bassett, head of the department of geography in the state Normal school at Macomb., Ill. A short service will be held at the home this afternoon, a notice of the same appearing in another column. The body will be taken on the Illinois Central train Saturday morning at 6:12 for burial.

DEATH OF MRS. MEAD

At the home of Mr. Bassett, 508 South Fell avenue on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 occurred the death of Mrs. Lydia Mead. Her death was not unexpected by the family, as she has been confined to her bed for nearly three weeks, and though not suffering from any disease there was a breaking down of the entire system, owing to her extreme old age. Her maiden name was Lydia Root. She was born in Delaware, O. August 16, 1813, and was married in the same place to Mr. D.R. Mead in December, 1830. Her childhood and early married life were passed in Ohio. For a time she lived in Indianapolis and sat under the preaching of Henry Ward Beecher. For fifteen or twenty years she resided at Greensburg, Ind., From there she moved to Dubuque, Ia., but came to Normal about ten years ago, and since that time has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Bassett. Since early life she had been a member of the Presbyterian church and at the time of her death was connected with the Presbyterian church in Normal. In her active years she was greatly interested in church work, and especially in the work of the Sunday schools. She was the mother of eleven children, give of whom are still living They are Mrs. Elias Metcalf, of Jacksonville, Ill.; Mrs. Belle Blackstone, of Berwyn, I. T.; Mr. Frank J. Mead, of Minnehaha, Minn.; Mrs. Lydia Mead Collins, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. Bassett, of this city. The funeral occurred at the home of Mr. Bassett Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock, conducted by Rev. W.D. Smith and Rev. Richard Crewes. The remains will be taken this morning to Greensburg, Ind., where they will be buried in South Park cemetery by the side of her husband, who died nearly forty years ago.

-----------------------------------------------

We have received a marked copy of the Bloomington Pantagraph which records the death of Mrs. Lydia Mead at the advanced age of nearly 89 years. Deceased was the mother of Mrs. Barzilla Bassett, at whose home in Normal she died last Saturday. The remains were taken to Greensburg, Indiana, for burial beside those of her husband.

35857 Mrs. Mary Bass

Departed this life at her residence in Wilson county, Tennessee, on the 18th day of May, 1857, sister Mary Bass, widow of the late Sion Bass.
Sister Bass was born in North Carolina, July 23, 1789; was married to Sion Bass in 1809; made a public profession of religion in 1835 ? but as many others do, she lived out of duty until November 1837, at which time she united with the Baptist church at Little Cedar Lick, and was baptized by Elder Peter Fuqua, in which church she lived a pious and devoted member to the day of her death. When she made a profession of religion, she said her great desire was that she might be spared to see her husband and all her children become religious, and in July, 1843, she had the pleasure of seeing her husband make a public profession of religion, and was baptized into the fellowship of the same church with her. She lived to see all of her children professors of religion but one son. She was always ready for every good word and work. Liberal in her contributions to Home and Foreign Missions. In 1847 she last her husband. On the 8th of January, 1857, she was stricken with a paralytic affection, confining her to her room, and most of the time to her bed, until her death. She often said during her afflictions, that she knew her stay on earth was short, but told her children who wanted on her, to suffer no uneasiness, for she was not alarmed at death; let the summons come when it might, she had no fears; that she saw her way clear, and ?all was well.?
On the 18th of May she had the second attack of palsy, and was only able to speak two or three words. She lived some ten hours and fell asleep in the arms of Jesus, there to rest until the morning of the resurrection. She has left six children, all of whom are heads families, with many relatives and friends to mourn their loss; but they mourn not as those who have no hope. May God sanctify this dispensation to the good of all living. R.R. Barton.

George Bass
February 16, 1947 ? September 8, 2023
Raytown, Missouri

With heavy hearts and deep sadness, we announce the passing of a beloved father, grandfather, husband, brother, and friend, George Frank Bass, who left us on September 8, 2023. His journey through life touched the hearts of many and his memory will forever be etched in our souls.
George was born on February 16, 1947, in a world still recovering from the aftermath of World War II. He entered this world with a spirit of strength and a curiosity that would remain with him throughout his life. George's early years were marked by the simple pleasures of childhood and the deep bonds of family, and faith which he cherished until his final days.
George was a complicated man; He remained true to himself throughout his life doing it his way. He was a patriot who enlisted in the navy during a time of war and earned the rank of Yeoman 1st Class. George was strong, fearless, and utterly committed to his convictions. He believed in family above all else and fiercely loved his children and grandchildren.
George's love for the great outdoors was evident in his passion for fishing and his appreciation for the beauty of nature. He found solace and peace by the water's edge, and his fishing adventures became legendary among his family and friends. His stories of those serene or sometimes funny moments, spent under the open sky, will be cherished by those who had the privilege of joining him or hearing them.
As we say our final goodbyes to George Bass, let us remember the light he brought into our lives, the lessons he shared with his family, and the steadfastness he taught us through his actions. In his passing, we find solace in the knowledge that he now rests in eternal peace, fishing in the tranquil waters.
George's legacy lives on through his children, grandchildren, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched. His memory is a testament to the enduring power of love. George was preceded in death by His Parents, Paul and Edna Bass, His son Bryan Bass, his wife Patty, and his brothers Don and William ?Bill? Schneider, his sisters Eleanor and Jerry Sanfratello.
He is survived by his children Jeff, Kirk, Brooke, and Holly. He also leaves behind a host of 15 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, as well as 2 former spouses Barbara Crane and Robyn Davis.

William Henry Bass III
October 7, 1949 ? March 4, 2019

William Henry (Hank) Bass III, 69, died on March 4 in Memphis. The son of Henry and Clara Bibb Bass, Hank spent his formative years in Munford, playing Little League baseball and high school football (cheered on by his dad); dining at the City Cafe (where he always started with pie); shooting the breeze (and perhaps filling up a car) with Wash and Oscar at his father?s service station; and watching Westerns (which left him with an autographed picture of Lash Larue and a lifelong crush on Miss Kitty ?the most beautiful woman in the world?). He always considered his an idyllic childhood in the one-stop town where everybody was a friend or relative. Munford was a community that, to his chagrin, never let him forget his misspent youth, but also embraced him, especially after the sudden death of his mother when he was a child.

Hank loved history. He earned a bachelor?s and master?s degree from the University of Tennessee and a doctorate (ABD) in historic preservation at MTSU. He used his education in positions at the James K. Polk Historic House Museum (Columbia), The Tennessee State Museum (Nashville), The Chattanooga Regional History Museum, and the Legal History Center at the State Bar of Texas (Austin). He was general editor of a middle school history textbook published by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, and he taught American history at the college level at UT, Chattanooga.

His daughters, Kate and Mary, were the sun and the moon and the firm foundation of Hank?s life. He also loved Elvis and Muddy Waters, and he exercised his creative spirit through landscaping. He had a tender heart for the underdog and a gentle deference with old folks. He had a sparkling intellect, a wry sense of humor, a horror of weak coffee, and unshakable loyalty. Though they occasionally broke his heart, he loved the Vols, the Blues, and his girls.

Facing a cancer diagnosis, Hank drew upon a strength of character forged through his life experience. He found a resolve to endure pain and loss? keeping his sense of humor throughout. He took comfort in the support from his daughters, his sister, and lifelong friends. Hank is survived by Kate and Mary and their mother, Randal, and his sister, Susan Griffin, and her family, Terry, Claire, Emily, Reagan, and Henry. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service at First Methodist Church, Munford, on Sunday, March 17, at 2:30 pm, followed by a reception and time for celebrating his life.
