    Notes:

3B325437. David Edwin Bassett, son of Loren Elias and Hulda Dimrus (Vaughn) Bassett, was born 9 Oct 1846 in Carthage, Hancock County, Illinois. He died 17 Feb 1935 in Basin, Big Horn County, Wyoming. He married Eliza Jane Atkinson, daughter of Alfred John and Ann (Botting) Atkinson, on 9 Apr 1867 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. She was born 22 Jul 1852 in Bermondsey, Surrey, England. She died 26 Feb 1934 in Basin, Big Horn County, Wyoming. They are both buried in the Iona-Kane Cemetery, Big Horn County, Wyoming.
Eliza Jane sailed for America with her family in March of 1855. They settled in Millcreek, Salt Lake County, Utah. In 1857 they moved to Mendon, Utah, where, later, she met and married Edwin Bassett. After several moves they made Clarkston, Utah their home, where they had a nice dairy farm. Eliza became very proficient in making butter and cheese. She carded and spun wool and wove it into cloth for her husband's suits and shirts.
David Edwin also married Emily Ann Atkinson, sister to Eliza Jane, on 25 Oct 1869 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. Emily was born 28 Jan 1855 in Egham, Berkshire, England. She died 30 Mar 1924 in Idaho Falls, Bonneville County, Idaho.
In 1886 Edwin took a contract to build part of the railroad from Frannie to Thermopolis, Wyoming, and Eliza boarded 15 men. They worked two summers, living in tents. In the winter they returned to Clarkston.

In 1889 David Edwin moved to Star Valley, Wyoming with Eliza Jane, leaving Emily Ann and her children behind for a time. His leaving Emily behind in Clarkston was most likely due to the threats of anti-polygamy raids from federal marshals. (See note below.) In 1899 David Edwin and Eliza Jane moved to the Big Horn Basin in northern Wyoming.

GIVEN NAME: He was given the name of Edwin Bassett at birth. When he married his second wife, Emily Ann, he used the name David to avoid prosecution by the fedral marshals. (See note on polygamy below.) Both names have continued, with the namd David often in parentheses.

Note: David Edwin Bassett participated in the practice of plural marriage that was promoted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) for a time in the early days of the Church. It was viewed as a divine commandment to “raise up seed unto God” and practiced by only 20% to 25% of the Mormon population. Only men who were called by those in authority were to practice it and only after obtaining the consent of the current wife. The “Manifesto” of 1890 ended this practice. (See Ludlow, Encyclopedia of Mormonism, Vol. 3 (1992), pp. 1095, 1109). Polygamist marriages, like most marriages and families worked well in some cases and not so well in others. From accounts of the descendants of David Edwin Bassett, this plural marriage worked well. Ona Bassett Scott, the youngest daughter of David Edwin and Eliza Jane wrote this description of the families: “Sometime after Father and Mother were married, Father married Emily Ann, younger sister of Mother.... It has been said by families and by the older children who experienced it, that the home with the two families in it could not have been any more harmonious. They can’t remember a single harsh or angry word between the two mothers or the two sets of children. A child would mind one mother just as readily as the other. It was the Manifesto that separated the two families.” When this declaration from the Church ended the practice of plural marriage in 1890, those who were already married still faced possible prosecution from the federal marshals. This may be what made it necessary for Emily Ann and her children to stay behind when David Edwin and Eliza Jane moved on. Emily did have help from her parents family in raising her children. She was also skilled in domestic crafts and was able to support herself.

David married Emily Ann Atkinson on 25 Oct 1869 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah. Emily (daughter of Alfred John Atkinson and Ann Botting) was born on 26 Jan 1855 in Egham, Surrey, England; died on 31 Mar 1924 in Idaho Falls, Bonneville, Idaho; was buried on 1 Apr 1924 in Wilford Cem., Fremont, Idaho. BIRTH: The birthdate, 5 March 1809, place of birth, Granby, Hartford, CT and parentage, Elisha Bassett and Lucy Gillette, comes from the Family Group Records - Main Record Section (Archive Record, LDS Family History Library), family group records of (1) Loren Elias Bassett (1809) and Rachel English, and (2) Elisha Bassett (1775) and Lucy Gillette.

The Patriarchal Blessing Index (BYU film #392635) lists his birthdate as 3 Mar 1809 in Conn. and his parents as Elias and Lucy Bassett.

The 3 March and 5 March different recordings of Loren Elias' birthdate may be the result of a clerical error when interpreting or recording the date.

GIVEN NAME: Loren Elias' given name is listed as Lorin in the 1850, 1860, and 1880 censuses; and as Loren in the 1856 and 1870 censuses. His name is listed as Loren Elias on the family group records of Loren Elias Bassett (1809) and Rachel nee English and Elisha Bassett (1775) and Lucy nee Gillett filed in the Family Group Records - Main Record Section (Archive Record) Family Group Records and the Temple Record Index Bureau (TIB). It is spelled Elias in the Patriarchal Blessing Index. In the records of Cortland, Genesee, and Wyoming counties, NY, his name is listed as Elias Bassett.

MARRIAGE TO RACHEL ENGLISH: No marriage record has been found for Loren Elias Bassett to Rachel English. It is likely that they were married about the year 1830 in either Cortland or Onondaga County, New York. In the 1820 census of Scott, Cortland, NY, p. 571 (BYU film #66) Loren Elias was likely one of the two males between 10 & 15 in the Elias Bassett household.

    TESTIMONY OF HENRY MARTIN HARMON
WITNESS TO THE MARTYRDOM OF THE PROPHET JOSEPH SMITH
at Carthage, Hancock, Illinois, 28 Jun 1844

I, Henry M. Harmon, aged 25, do solemnly declare and affirm that on the 27th day of June 1844, I lived in Carthage and was on the cupola of the court house in Carthage when the anti-Mormon mob made their appearnace from the west. I came down from the cupola and arrived at the jail about
the time the mob did. They were painted black and mostly wore the uniform of the Warsaw Company. I saw the mob rush onto the guards who were stationed at the jail, when the guar fired upon them and a scuffle ensued. Some of the mob then went into the jail and I heard the reports of the guns fired inside. Joseph Smith came to the window, and then went back and in a few moments appeared again, and leaped from the window, when the mob fired upon him and he fell dead. The fifer of the Warsaw Company came running into the jail yard as Joseph fell dead, and brandishing his fife over Joseph, triumphantly exclaimed, "You were the ruination of my father. I will have revenge," and struck him several times on the head with hiw pewter fife, then fled with the company toward Warsaw.
I then went home and told my mother what had happened, and returned in a few minutes and saw Joseph who was set up against the well curb, and was informed that Stigall the jailor had set him up there. Stigall appeared very much alarmed. His room in the lower part of the jail being fired into through the window and his wife only just escaped being shot. I have examined many time where the ball lodged in the wall after being shot through the window.
In company with my mother (Hulda Vaughn Harmon) and step-father, (Loren E. Bassett) we moved that even 3 miles out of Carthage onto our farm. My Mother did not want to go, but my step-father insisted. Next day, with my brother, I returned to Carthage and found the town almost entirely
    vacated.
