Gene Taylor Bass

Gene Taylor Bass, of Groveton, Texas, was born on April 1, 1948, in Houston, Texas, to Marlin Taylor Bass and Nora Faye McNealy Bass. He passed away peacefully on July 28, 2026, at his home in Groveton, surrounded by his beloved dogs. Gene lived a life marked by service, generosity, faith, and a genuine concern for others. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was later honorably discharged due to a medical disability. His service to his country remained an important part of his life and something of which he was deeply proud. Those who knew Gene knew his giving heart. He was always willing to help someone in need and would often give what he had, even when he had little to spare himself. He did not help others for recognition or praise. It was simply part of who he was. Gene?s love for his family was evident throughout his life. He loved his daughter, Malinda, his grandchildren, and his nieces and nephews, and he cared deeply for the people he considered family. He shared many years with his beloved wife, Emilie Kay Bass, and the family they built and the memories they shared remained an important part of his story. Gene?s caring spirit extended beyond his family and into the Groveton community he called home. He formed special relationships with his niece Stephanie Hudspeth, his neighbors, the Haltom family, and his pastor and pastor?s wife, who became some of his closest and most trusted friends. They offered Gene friendship, companionship, and support and helped him remain connected to the home and community that meant so much to him. The love and support shown to Gene meant more than words can adequately express. Gene also had an especially tender heart for animals. His dogs were far more than pets; they were his faithful companions and an important part of his family and everyday life. His three beloved dogs remained by his side at his home at the end of his life. Two ??have since passed away, while his surviving dog is now lovingly cared for by Gene?s family and is happy and thriving in his new home. Gene loved the Lord, and his faith remained an important part of his life. He was thankful for the prayers, friendship, fellowship, and support he received from his church family at Calvary Tabernacle Assembly of God. Gene was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Emilie Kay Bass; his parents, Marlin Taylor Bass and Nora Faye McNealy Bass; his sister, Rhonda Whitley; his nephew, Wayne Allen Gibson; and his brother-in-law, Johnny Whitley. He is survived by his daughter, Malinda Hicks and husband, Mike; his granddaughter, Caitlin Hicks; his grandson, Corbin Hicks; and his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, including Melissa Watkins, Chase Gibson, Jessica Watkins, Sean Delacruz, Stephanie Hudspeth, and Dylan Pillows. He also leaves behind extended family members, cherished friends, neighbors, and members of the Groveton community whose lives became intertwined with his own. Gene will be remembered as a proud veteran and a man with a generous heart. His love for his daughter and family, his affection for his animals, his appreciation for his friends and neighbors, his faith, and his willingness to help others were evident in the way he lived. His legacy can be found not only in the years he lived, but in the people he loved, the kindness he gave, the country he served, the lives he touched, and the memories that will continue to be shared by those who knew him.
