Oldest SIU-C Letterman Cecil R. Bass, 85 dies
Funeral services for Cecil R. Bass, who was the oldest living Southern Illinois University-Carbondale athletic letterman, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Huffman Funeral Home in Carbondale. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale.
Friends may call after 4 p.m. today in the funeral home.
Mr. Bass, 85, of 1425 Old West Main St., Carbondale, was inducted into the SUIC-C Sports Hall of Fame as a charter member in February 1978. He played football and basketball for the Salukis in the mid 1910s.
His son in law Verdie Cox, who now resides in Houghton, Mich., was a former Saluki athlete who was inducted into the SUI-C Hall of Fam this year.
Mr. Bass died at 4:19 p.m. Saturday, March, 24, 1979, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, after a brief illness.
He was a conductor for the Illinois Central railroad for 43 years.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Elks Club, both in Carbondale, and the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen.
He was born Aug. 14, 1893, in Thompsonville, to Marion and Ann McCreery Bass. He married Martha Cheevers in October of 1916. She died Dec. 25, 1954. He later married Mildred Scott Corzine in October of 1959. She preceded him in death Nov. 6, 1970.
Survivors include two daughters, Catherine Johnson of Holly, Mich., and Virginia Cox of Houghton, Mich.; one sister, Pearl Wilson of Sarasota, Fla.; and four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Mr. Bass? son, Jack, and sister, Amy Croslin, preceded him in death.
