Jerry Dawson Bass
DUNN ? Jerry Dawson Bass, 82, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family in the early morning of Thursday, March 16, 2023.
Jerry was born in Harnett County on Dec. 26, 1940. He was the son of Felton and Alma D. Bass and he had one brother, Sherrill Bass. He graduated from Dunn High School in 1959 and attended Campbell University. He owned and operated an upholstery and trim shop along with his brother, Sherrill Bass, for over 40 years. There are many people in the surrounding area that had their car seats and furniture repaired, reupholstered or worked on by Jerry and Sherrill.
Jerry was a hard worker and active all his life in the community. You could find him working late hours to get a project done or helping with the church, a family or neighbor. He was always full of stories, and they were all true because he lived it or experienced it. He always had some jokes and would put a smile on your face. He was a humble man and a man of his word. If he told you it was true, it was, and if he promised something to be done, it got done at the price he quoted you.
He enjoyed sports and met the love of his life, Elaine Bass, playing softball. He played up into his 40s. He coached his son, Jeremy, and many local boys in baseball over the years and was always there supporting his teams and going to the games. That did not stop with his granddaughters as he attended all their basketball and softball games, as long as his health would allow. He also supported his wife, Elaine, and her sisters in their music ministry for many years traveling to area churches and events and was a vital member of the sound and stage crew.
He was a charter member of North Clinton Avenue Baptist Church in Dunn, where he attended and served in his early days. When he married Elaine in 1970, he attended Grove Presbyterian Church in Dunn where he was very active and served as a deacon. Later in life, Jerry and Elaine became members of Mt. Carmel Pentecostal Free Will Baptisst Church, where he is a member and served as a deacon. He never lost contact with all three churches, and he treated them all as family and they felt the same way about him.
Jerry was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Elaine Allen Bass; his parents, Felton and Alma Dawson Bass; and his brother, Sherrill Felton Bass. He is survived by his son, Jeremy Stewart Bass and wife Melissa; and granddaughters, Kristen and Aubree Bass, all of Dunn.
A visitation service will be held Saturday, March 18, 2023, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Skinner & Smith Funeral Home in Dunn. The service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Mt. Carmel PFWB Church in Dunn with burial to follow at the Grove Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Dunn.
Memorials can be made to Mt. Carmel PFWB Church, 2425 Benson Highway, Dunn, NC 28334; or to Grove Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 2319, Dunn, NC 28335.
