Joseph Garland Bass, 78
Joseph Garland "Joe" Bass, 78, a native of Richmond, passed away Monday, February 5, 2001. Joe was born on March 20, 1922, in Richmond, the son of the late James Egbert Bass Sr. and Goldie Oppleman Bass. He graduated from John Marshall High School and attended the University of Richmond prior to being called to the U.S. Air Force to serve and defend his country in WWII. After the war, Joe and his wife, Margaret "Maggie," and his daughter, Jo Anne, moved to Ohio, where he loved his life as a husband and father and enjoyed his successful business as an independent milk hauler and his membership as a 32nd degree Mason. During this time, he and his wife gave birth to their second daughter, Patricia Lyn, and their son, Joseph Timothy. Returning to their Virginia home in the early 1970s, Joe became a real estate appraiser and tax assessor for the city of Franklin, Southampton County and the city of Emporia, where he eventually retired in 1998. Joe was a loving, smart, honest man whose cheer and generosity were boundless. He gave his all in life. For all this, his family thrived and he earned the love, respect and admiration of many, many friends. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margaret Branch Bass; his children, Jo Anne Bass Earl of Roundhill, Va., Patricia Bass Pallante of Radford, Va., and Joseph Timothy Bass of Midlothian; sons-in-law, Bryan Robert Earl and Paul Pallante; daughter-in-law, Wanda Tatum Bass; seven grandchildren, Patrick Alan Mahrt, Oliver Andrew Earl, Paul David Pallante, Elisabeth Brooke Pallante, Joseph Gibson Pallante, Tatum Briggs Bass and Taylor Lynn Bass; sister, Gaynelle Bass Macfarlane. Known as "Joe," "Daddy," "Dad," "Biggy," "Granddaddy" and "Da-da-di," he is truly a man for all to remember. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 7, at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., where services will be held Thursday, February 8, 11 a.m. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.
