Phyllis Katherine Bass
August 23, 1923 ? April 28, 2019
Phyllis Katherine Bass, 95, a resident of the Cornelius community passed away on April 28, 2019 at her home.
Phyllis was born on August 23, 1923 in Prophetstown, IL. She was the middle child of three children born to Fred and Alma (Hoogerwerf) Schehl. She was raised on the family farm just outside of Atkinson, IL. where she attended Atkinson High School graduating with the Class of 1941. Phyllis went on to graduate from Western Illinois State Teachers College and received a Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1946.
Phyllis moved to Oregon after graduation-she was told there was a need for teachers and she was a woman of adventure. While looking through index cards at the Oregon Education Association the principal of Sheridan High School noticed her and offered her a job where she taught mainly English and Business classes. She met her future husband, Randolph "Bob" Bass, while walking home from work, they happened to cross paths at the right time and place. Bob finally asked Phyllis out and following a short courtship they married on November 12, 1949 in Vernonia. They made their home in Sheridan until 1955 when they moved to Hillsboro. They had ten children: Paula, Lauri, Bruce, Randy, Fred, Joe, Bart, Lisa, Therese and Rob. Bob passed away on October 20, 1983. In 1989 Phyllis moved to "the Farm" in Blooming.
Phyllis was a loving and devoted mother and wife. When her children became school age, she picked up her teaching career. First as a substitute in the Gaston School District where she taught a variety of subjects, and then a full time position in the Hillsboro School District at Poynter and Mid-High (JB Thomas) teaching English and Business courses, until her retirement in 1988.
Phyllis was a master seamstress, she made many of her children's clothes.You could often find her in the wee hours of the morning at her sewing machine creating her latest master piece. She also loved to dance. Most every Saturday night you would find her with her dancing friends at the Pumpkin Ridge Grange Hall for the weekly dance. Along with teaching her children and grandchildren to ?cut a rug? she also taught them to play the piano. She would coordinate a family talent show every year and encouraged family to perform at family gatherings. Phyllis loved to travel and enjoyed making friends with people from all over the world. She was an avid volunteer for both St Matthew Catholic Church in Hillsboro and St Alexander Catholic Church in Cornelius. At St. Alexander?s she spearheaded the restoration of the Fern Hill Cemetery and was an advocate for the church?s food shelter for over 10 years. In the early 60?s she was passionate about working with The VISTA program in helping improve conditions for local migrant workers in Washington Co.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband; daughter Paula; four grandchildren (Jaime, Joel, Joey and Tyler); and her sister Marie, brother Gene, and her parents.
She is survived by her nine children and their spouses; Lauri Bass Jansen of Hillsboro, Bruce and Sandy Bass of Woodburn, Randy and Mimi Bass of Gaston, Fred Bass of Cornelius, Joe and Michele Bass of Hillsboro, Bart and Laurie Bass of Cornelius, Lisa Bass Rennie of Forest Grove, Theresa and David Peecher of Hillsboro, Rob and Nellie Bass of Portland; Thirteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.
