Bates Mrs. Sue Catherine Bates, 88, of 13 Lyman St., died Thursday morning in an Asheville hospital after a long illness. Mrs. Bates was a native of Buncombe County, a daughter of the late George and Nancy Owenby Bass. She was the widow of Dave Bates. She was a member of French Broad Avenue Baptist Church. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. O. L. Clark and Mrs. Lela Lamb of Asheville and Mrs. Bessie Arrowood of Hiawassee, Ga.; and a son, Gertie Bates of Asheville. Also surviving are five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Groce Funeral Home. The Rev. Perry Sprinkle and the Rev. Hubert Lamb will officiate. Burial will be in Gashes Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bill and R. H. Bates, Jack Midgett, Vern Lamb, T. A. Yarborough and Edward Frady.
