      Ernest "Buddy" Bass, Jr. CHAPIN, SC - Ernest "Buddy" Brevard Bass, Jr. DDS, 88, of Chapin, South Carolina, husband of Lillian Bass entered into eternal rest Sunday, June 25, 2023. His Funeral Service will be held Thursday, June 29, 2023, in J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street, at 1:00 pm. Interment to follow at Bethany Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm in J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel. Buddy was born May 19, 1935, in Statesville, North Carolina, son of Ernest B. Bass, Sr. and Eva Bradford Bass. Buddy attended Durham high school as a multi-sport star and graduated in 1952. He attended Duke University where he played football and baseball. He was the co-captain of the 1955 Orange Bowl team victory over Nebraska. Buddy married the love of his life, Lillian, in November of 1957, attended and graduated from the University of North Carolina Dental School. Enlisting in the Navy in the Dental Corp in 1958, and served in the Viet Nam conflict in 1967 and 1968 while on active duty, later retiring at the rank of Commander in 1978. After Viet Nam, Buddy and Lillian settled in Charleston, SC. He established a partnership that created Lowcountry Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, LLC. Buddy was a key part of a Cleft Palate clinic group that paved the way for major changes in the treatment of cleft palates. Buddy was licensed in North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida. Buddy was an avid outdoorsman loving fishing and hunting, which he was able to enjoy being a member of the James Island Yacht Club and Bluefield Hunting Club in Jacksonboro, SC. He was an active member of St. Matthews Church and the Exchange Club of Charleston, where he enjoyed his monthly attendance and serving every year during the Coastal Carolina Fair fundraising. One of his greatest joys was watching his grandchildren play sports. Along with his wife, Lillian, he is survived by his daughter, Missy (Gerald) Dawson of Beaufort, SC; three sons, Brett (Deanna) Bass of Lincolnton, GA, Bobby (Janice) Bass of Chapin, SC, Byron (Pam) Bass of Charleston, SC; nine grandchildren, Holli Dawson, Kyle Dawson, Darby Kress, Behren Ketchum, Andrew Agius, Elizabeth Bass, Adam Bass, Bailey Bass, Parker Bass; and three great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Matthews Lutheran Church, 405 King Street, Charleston, SC 29403.
