BELLE FOURCHE | Gene Bassett, 90, died Sept. 5, 2021.
A Ceremonial Tribute for Gene Bassett, 90, of Belle Fourche will be held Wednesday, September 22 at 11:00 AM at St. James Lutheran Church in Belle Fourche. Inurnment will follow at 1:30 PM at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Gene Bassett died September 5, 2021.

Gene Arthur Bassett
Gene Arthur Bassett Sr., 90, of Belle Fourche passed away September 5, 2021 at the Ft. Meade VA Hospital.
He was born April 3, 1931 in Canton, South Dakota to Fred and Gertrude (Harms) Bassett. He attended country school near Hayti, SD. Gene worked on a farm until he enlisted in the United States Army in 1948. He served in the Korean War until he was honorably discharged May 14, 1952. He earned the Purple Heart.
On June 15, 1952 he married Susan DeJong and to that union 5 children were born, Fred, Gene, Kathleen, Suzanne and Joel. Gene worked a variety of construction jobs until becoming disabled.
Gene was a lifelong member of the DAV and served as commander in Hot Springs, SD. He loved spending time with family and friends. He took a lot of pride in his toy collection. He also liked to drop a nickel or two in the machine.
He is survived by his children, Fred (Wanda) Bassett of Sioux Falls, Gene Jr. (Susan) Bassett of New Mexico, Kathleen Bassett of Belle Fourche, Suzanne (Joseph) DeJong of Belle Fourche and Joel Bassett of Sheridan, WY; 10 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and his brother, Gilbert (Barbara) Bassett of Sioux Falls, SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Susan Bassett; brothers, Robert and Joel Bassett; a sister, Bertha Tieman and a sister in infancy; a granddaughter, Jennifer Scott.
A Ceremonial Tribute will be held Wednesday, September 22 at 11:00 am at St. James Lutheran Church in Belle Fourche with Reverend Kari Webb officiating. Inurnment will follow at 1:30 pm at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with military honors provided by the Belle Fourche Veterans Honor Guard.
