      PARMA HEIGHTS - William S. Bassett started working at Parma Senior High School in 1932 as a teacher and track and football coadh.
      From 1938 to 1966, he was principal at the school. On the east wall of the auditorium lobby, there is a painting dedicated to him for his tireless work.
      Mr. Bassett, 90, died Friday at Aristocrat South Nursing Home in Parms Heights.
      He was a 1924 graduate of South High School. He was captain of the football team and was named to The Plain Dealer's All-Senate Football Team in 1923.
      He was a 1932 graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College, where he played baseball and football. He received a master's degree in education from Western Reserve University. For two years, he attended the Western Reserve University School of Pharmacy.
      He served as director of the Community Center at Bowling Green State University and was supervisor of student teachers there. He was a member of the Boy Scouts and a past president of Theta Nu fraternity at Baldwin-Wallace.
      Mr. Bassett was chairman of the Lake Erie League and a member of the Greater Cleveland State Teachers Association. He was a member of the Ohio Principals Association and the North Central Principals Association. He was chairman of the Community College Committee of North Central Ohio, and a member of the South High Alumni Association and the Parma High Alumni Association.
      He was a member of the Parma Lions Club and the Baldwin-Wallace Letterman's Club, the Berea Kiwanis Club and the PTA.
      In the summer of 1968, he served as assistant treasurer for the Cuyahoga County Fair.
      He was a longtime Cleveland and Berea resident before moving to Parma in 1986.
      Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; daughter, Joan Rice of Strongsville; a brother; and two grandchildren. His first wife, Eva, is deceased.
      Services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Parma South Presbyterian Church, 6155 Pearl Rd., Parma Heights.
      Arrangements are being handled by Baker Funeral Home in Berea.
