Gun Shot Robs Bass of Toes
World War II Vet Injured In Mishap Before Going On Hunt

Kenneth Bass, World War II Navy veteran and a firefighter at Camp Rucker, accidentally shot a hole through his right foot on Christmas afternoon.
Bass, who suffered a shoulder injury when hit by a shell during World War II, was at the home of his father, Dennis Bass, who resided 9 miles south of Andalusia on the Brewton highway, at time of the accident.
With his father and other family members, Bass was preparing to go quail hunting, when he shucked a new shotgun from a case. Several days earlier, he had let a friend borrow the gun. The weapon had been left loaded, and when Bass removed it from the case, it was inadvertently discharged. Others in the hunting party, standing in the yard, rushed him to Covington Memorial Hospital, from where he was transferred to the Veterans Hospital in Montgomery.
Bass underwent surgery in Montgomery on Monday. He telephoned relatives here Monday night to advise that his foot will not have to be amputated. The big and little toes were saved, he said.
Bass, his wife and young son reside in Enterprise, where he worked for the City Fire Department before becoming a fireman at Camp Rucker.
