Mr. Clarence Johnson Bass, 85, of 901 W. Mount Gilead Church Road, Clinton, died Monday at his home surrounded by his family.
Mr. Bass, born in Sampson County to Lonnie D. and Tempie Jackson Bass, was a member of Mount Gilead Baptist Church. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, a past member of Shaky Bay Hunting Club and Six Runs Hunting Club, and a dedicated fan of his grandchildren's softball, baseball and basketball games. In adition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three brothers, Reverend Burnice Bass, Crafton Bass, and Newberry Bass, Sr., two sisters, Crotia B. Blanchard and Irma B. Peterson, and one grandchild, Phyllis Alene Bass.
He is survived by his wife, Doris McLamb Bass of the home, a daughter, Barbara Bass Elmore and husband Dewey Stephen Elmore, a son, Steven Johnson Bass and wife Gail B. Bass, and youngest daughter, Joan Bass Lane all of Clinton, Mr. Bass was "Granddaddy Johnson" to nine grandchildren, Amy Jennifer Elmore, Stephen Eric Elmore, Johnson Deleon Bass, William Edwin Bass, Amanda Gail Bass, Sharon Grace Bass, Brittaney Elizabeth Haire, Ashley Brooke Lane, and Jordan Matthew Lane, and three great-grandchildren, William Henry Bass, Adyson Elizabeth Lane-Spencer, and Cayden Lane Bass. He is also survived by five brothers, Howard Bass of Dunn, Lonnie J. Bass and Carl G. Bass both of Clinton, Milton Bass of Fayetteville, Dr. Shelton Bass of Lakeland, Florida; and two sisters, Alice Jane Royal of Salemburg, and Alease B. Compton of Hendersonville.
The family recieved friends Tuesday evening, November 10, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at the Crumpler Honeycutt Funeral Home in Clinton.
The funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at Mount Gilead Baptist Church with the Reverend Oliver Skerrett, Reverend Ernest Mason, and Reverend David McClellan officiating.
Burial was made in the church cemetery.
