      I, Elam Bass, of the county of Halifax and state of Virginia being of sound mind and memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other and former wills by me hereafter made.
      1st. My will and desire is that all my just debts shall be first paid and that such portion of my estate as can be most conveniently spared shall be sold for that purpose.
      2nd. I give to my daughter Mary A W Holloway a Negro girl Eliza at the price of $500, a bay mare at the price of $50, a bed and furniture at the price of $50 and a cow and calf at the price of $10, to her and her heirs forever all of which said property the said Mary has already received in her possession.
      3rd. I give to my daughter Sarah Frances Craddock the sum of $510, a bay mare at the price of $50, and a bed and furniture at the price of $50 to her and her heirs forever all of which said money and property the said Sarah Frances Craddock has already received into her possession.
      4th. My will and desire is that my Negro boy Prescott shall be sold by my executors hereafter named provided they can obtain more for him than the value of a field hand he being a tanner by trade.
      5th. My will and desire is that all the balance of my estate of every description whatsoever shall be kept together and held by my wife but upon the following conditions and for the following uses and purposes to wit. 1st that she shall give to each of my children to wit. John, Robert B, Alexander C, and Virginia Hasseltine the same amount of education heretofore received by my older children. 2nd That she shall as fast as the income of my estate will ? without reducing it below comfortable support of herself and family advance to each of my children to wit. Richard Edward, Ermine Jane, George W, John, Emily J, Robert B, Alexander C, and Virginia Hasseltine, as they respectively arrive to lawful age or marry, the same amount of property Heretofore received by my daughters Mary A W Holloway and Sarah Frances Craddock to them and their heirs forever.
      6th. Should it become necessary and desirable in the opinion of my wife and my executors during the lifetime of my wife to sell the land on which I now live my will and desire is that the same shall be sold and the proceeds thereof invested by my said executors in lands where my family can more easily obtain a comfortable support.
      7th. My will and desire is that at the death of my wife the whole of my estate both real and personal after all of my said children shall have been made equal agreeably to the above bequests shall be equally divided among all of my children.
      I hereby appoint my son Richard Edward Bass & my friend George R Richardson executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all others and former wills by me heretofore made. On testimony wherever I have hereto subscribed my name and affixed my seal this 12th day of January 1847.

      I will and desire is that should my Negro boy Prescott be sold by my executors agreeable to the fourth bequest of my will bearing date on the 12th day of January 1847 and to which this is a codicil that the proceeds of such sale shall be paid over by my said executors as follows to wit. $500 thereof to my son Richard Edward Bass and the balance to my daughter Ermine Jane Oliver as part & parcel of their legacies to my will aforesaid. On testimony whereof I Elam Bass have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal this 2nd day of February 1847. Signed sealed and published by the said Elam Bass as a codicil of his last will and testament in our presence who witnessed the same and his presence at his request.

      At a court held for Halifax County the 22nd day of February 1847. The within written last will and testament of Elam Bass deceased was presented in court and proved by the oaths of 2 witnesses thereto subscribed and ordered to be recorded. Whereupon in motion of Richard E Bass and George R Richardson the executors therein named who made oaths according to law with William Watkins and William Edwards their securities entered and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of $15,000 conditioned according?
