G. Russell Bassett, Portage

G. Russell Bassett, age 70, of Portage, passed away Sunday, December 23, 2001 at Porter Memorial Hospital in Valparaiso. Russell was a lifelong Portage resident, U.S. Army Veteran during the Korean Conflict, member of Portage V.F.W. #7760 and retired member of Local #20 Sheet Metal Workers Union. He was also past business manager of Union Local #303 and past business representative of Union Local #20, past president of the Northwest Indiana Building Trades Council and an honorary member of Electricians Union Local #697 of Hammond. Mr. Bassett was a member of Dunes Masonic Lodge #741 F.&A.M., 32nd degree Master Mason, South Bend Consistory and a member of the Orak Shrine in Michigan City. At one time Russ was also active in Portage politics in the Democratic party serving as the Portage Township Trustee, the Portage Economic Development Commission and also on the State of Indiana O.S.H.A. Board. He was also a friend of Bill W. Mr. Bassett was preceded in death by his loving wife of 44 years, Barbara, in February of 1998 and brother, Frederick Bassett. He is survived by three sons, George R. Bassett Jr and Jack E. Bassett, both of Portage, Bruce B. (Meg) Bassett of Valparaiso and daughter, Brenda (Glenn) Bartley of Roswell, GA; seven grandchildren: Jonathon and Gabrielle Bassett, Alyssa Bassett; Michaela, Cara, Seth and Jenna Bartley.
Funeral services Friday, December 28, 2001, 11:00 A.M. at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Avenue, Portage, IN, with the Dunes Masonic Lodge officiating. Burial will follow at McCool Cemetery, Portage. Memorials are preferred to the American Diabetes Association. Visitation is Thursday, December 27th, from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel. 219-762-3013.
