John F. Bass
John F. Bass, a prosperous farmer, residing about eleven miles south of Salem, Mo., was born in the ?Old Dominion? in 1832, and is a son of Robert and Jane (Nasry) Bass, who were also born in Virginia, in 1788 and 800, respectively. The father was of Irish lineage, and in 1851 immigrated with his family to Tennessee, where he continued to make his home until 18565, when he took up his abode in Dent County, Mo., and there resided until his death in 1862. His wife?s death occurred in 1870, also in Dent County. Four of their nine children are living, John F. Bass being the fourth member of the family. He made his home with his parents, and received his education in Virginia. In 1879 he was united in marriage to Miss May Shelton, who was born in Tennessee in 1853, and is the mother of five children: Lee, Jackson, Benjamin, Sarah and Minnie. Soon after his marriage he located on the farm of 301 acres where he now lives; 120 acres ure under cultivation, and well improved, with good buildings, fences and orchage. Mr. Bass has always been a Democrat in politics, and in 1861 enlisted in Company E, First Regiment Missouri Infantry, and served until the close of the war, being a participant in the battles of Oak Hill, Lexington, Dry Wood, Harville and numerous skirmishes. At the latter engagement he received w dound in the hand, which left it badly crippled He is one of the pioneers of Dent County, and one of its substantial and honorable citizens. Mrs. Bass is a daughter of Berrymond and Sarah Shelton, both of whom are living.
