Frank Bailey Van Auken (1923-2015) (Picture included)

Frank Bailey Van Auken died on April 29, 2015 in the home after a six month battle with cancer. He was born August 22, 1923 in Paterson, New Jersey to William Douglass and Grace Bailey Van Auken.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Muriel Elizabeth Van Auken. He is also survived by his daughter, Carol Ridenhour (Jim); two grandchildren, David Ridenhour (Jennifer) and Jamie Ridenhour (Joe McMichael); and two great-grandsons, Nathaniel Franklin Ridenhour and Elijah David Ridenhour. He was a very special "Uncle Frank" to his six nieces and nephews and their families.
He graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 1947 with a degree in Art. His college career book-ended his service in the U.S. Army from 1942 through 1945. He served in the American Division in the Pacific Theater. After his graduation, he moved to Brooklyn, NY where he continued his studies at Pratt Institute and met his future wife at Marble Collegiate Church in NYC.
He worked as a layout artist for advertising agencies in NYC until his family's move to SC in 1973. He continued his career with advertising agencies in Greenville until his retirement.
He was deeply devoted to the life and work of his church, Lee Road United Methodist Church. Throughout his life he gave of his time and talents to his churches in honor of the Lord. Besides his family and his church, he loved tennis: both watching and playing. He finally stopped playing tennis with his buddies at the age of 90 (due to eyesight issues).
A worship service in celebration of his life will be held at Lee Road United Methodist Church at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 3rd. The family will receive friends in the parlor of the church at 2:00 p.m.
He will be buried in a family plot in Mannsville, NY at a future date.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Lee Road United Methodist Church.
