Obituary
Mrs. Elizabeth Bass, relict of the late Sterling Bass, senr., of Russell county, Ala., departed this life in Glennville, Barbour county, Ala, on the 4th inst., of bronchial affection, in the 76 year of her age.
For months she had suffered under a severe and protracted attack of Dysentery, which she bore with Christian fortitude. From this she recovered ? but hope how illusive! ? a lurking disease of yeas, a bronchial affection, supervened, which, aggravated by debility from long suffering, baffled the skill pf physicians, the kindest and most assiduous filial care and nursing.. She retained full possession of her mental faculties up to the last moment o her life, when blessed by the presence of all her loving children, and consoled with an unshaken hope of her acceptance with God, ?she fell asleep in Christ.?
The deceased was born in North Carolina in 1780, and marrying her late husband in 1805, removed, with him, in that year to Georgia. In 1818, they both joi8n8ed the Methodist Episcopal Church, and faithfully persevered to the end. As a wife, she was ever even tempered, kind, and devoted; as a mother, he heart expanded co-extensively with the welfare and happiness of her children, and by her affection and devotion to them, she made her home a place of peace, joy and Gladness; as a neighbor she was universally beloved; and as a Christian, from 1818 to her death, she knew no variablelness, or change in her faith and hope, but walked humbly before God, obeying His law, all her days, until it pleased Him to take her home.
It is mete briefly to notice the rare merit, the social worth, and Christian piety, of the truly good on earth. ? Their lives and examples live after them, and become rekindled in the hearts of the pure.
And the deceased justly ranked among that chosen few, who combine in their own persons, all the rare and good qualities usually distributed among many. The loss of one so pure and kind, so upright and pious, has left a void in the circle of her family, friends, kindred and society. ? She has gone to her reward, and whilst no storied urn, no monumental inscription, no elegiac verse will record her virtues, they will live inscribed on the memory and enshrined in the hearts of her friends and kindred.
