Shirley Bassett Ely (picture included)
Shirley Bassett Ely of Essex, died on Sunday, (April 2nd, 2006)
peacefully at the Middlesex Hospital Hospice Unit after a long struggle with
Parkinson's Disease. She was 84 years old.
Mrs. Ely was born in Indianapolis, IN on May 17, 1921, the daughter of the late
H. Lee Bassett and Elizabeth Paige Bassett. Her family moved from Columbus,
Indiana to Shaker Heights, OH, where she graduated from the Hathaway Brown
School. She attended Pine Manor Junior College and Rollins College, where she
met her husband, Matthew G. Ely, Jr. She was married on June 20, 1942 in Shaker
Heights, Cleveland, OH.
She raised three energetic boys in Pelham, NY and still found time to be very
active in many volunteer organizations: The Junior League, signing with the
League Larks, The Manor Club, serving on the Boards of Directors of both the
Child Guidance Council of New Rochelle and The Pelham Visiting Nurse
Association, and providing "Meals on Wheels" to shut-ins. She was an active
member of the Huguenot Memorial Church in Pelham and a member of the Shenorock
Shore Club in Rye. The family summered at Griswold Point, Old Lyme.
After moving to her husband's family home in Old Lyme in 1984, she continued to
volunteer at the Florence Griswold Museum, The Woman's Exchange and as a
Director of the Visiting Nurse Association. She was a member of the Fir
Congregational Church of Old Lyme, the Old Lyme Country Club, and the Black
Hall Beach Club. She enjoyed tennis, golf, swimming, knitting, needlepoint,
and piano.
She is survived by her loving husband Matthew G. Ely, Jr., her
sons: Matthew G. Ely III MD and his wife Susan of West Hartford; Timothy B.
Ely and his wife Laura of Fairfield; Dwight C. Ely Sr. and his wife Marie of
Trumbull. She leaves her five loving grandchildren: Collin, Melissa,
Elizabeth, Kate and Chip Ely. She is predeceased by her brother, Duncan Lee
Bassett and sister, Elizabeth French. She is survived by her devoted sister,
Joanne Stevenson of Essex. A Memorial Service will be held 1:30 p.m. on
Saturday, April 8th at the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme. A private
burial service will be held at the Griswold Cemetery in Old Lyme. In lieu of
