Thomas Bass Jr.
AUGUSTA, GA- Mr. Thomas L. Bass, Jr., age 83, entered into rest on Friday, March 24, 2006 at University Hospital with his family present. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 28, 2006 at Platt's Crawford Avenue Chapel at 4:00 pm with The Rev. Dr. J. Andrew Menger officiating. A native of LaGrange, GA, Mr. Bass was born on November 21, 1922 to the late Thomas L. and Helen Reeves Bass. He then moved to Daytona Beach, FLA in 1928 where he completed his elementary and high school education. On January 2,1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, following the attack on Pearl Harbor. He fought with the First Marine Division at the Battle of Guadalcanal, the First U.S. offensive in the Pacific Campaign in August 1942. After that the 1 st Marine Division took other islands in the Solomon Chain. His last duty in WWII was part of the occupation force in Japan. He was discharged January 5, 1946. After WWII, he started his career in the restaurant business first in Daytona Beach, FLA. In 1951 he moved to Charleston, SC, where he had several fine restaurants. None were better than Perditas, a wonderful restaurant of which he co-owned, with founder Gordon Bennett. Perditas was one of five restaurants in the United States to receive the Council of Paris Medal of Honor. He finished his career by founding Poogan's Porch on Queen Street. He retired in 1990, but continued to serve as a restaurant consultant. Tom, as he was known to his friends, moved to Augusta in 1999 to be with his son. His last long trip was to Washington D.C. with some fellow veterans to view the WWII Memorial, which they were proud and happy to see. Tom will be remembered for his folksy, humorous personality that would put you at ease shortly after the first handshake. He loved people and this was the reason for his successful career. He always said, The easiest thing in the world is to be nice to someone, it doesn't cost a thing. And if you knew Tom, you knew he meant it, about the money thing, that is. Survivors include one son, Dr. William T. Bass and his wife Susan of Augusta; granddaughter, Sarah B. Versaggi and her husband John of Alexandria, Virginia; a great granddaughter to be born in April; brother-in-law Dr. Braxton Godwin of Lake Mary, FLA; two nephews Bob Lichens of Port Orange, FLA and Ben Godwin, Tampa, FLA; five nieces, Nancy Breslin, Meredith Vincent, Susan Scott all of Daytona Beach, FLA, Belinda Judge of Sanford, FLA, Missy Judge of Miami, FLA; his good friend Jim Wood of Augusta, his faithful dog Lucy and many others. He was preceeded in death by his parents, first wife, Anne M. Bass, his sisters, Ann Godwin and Helen Judge, brother-in-law WW Judge, sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Eddie Lichens.
