Dorothy (Dot) Bass
Dorothy (Dot) Bass, 75, of Rice, Va., passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2006. She passed quietly in the comfort of her own home, surrounded by family and care providers after a long battle with cancer. Born in Charleston, S.C., on August 22, 1931, Dot grew up in Blacksburg, Va. She attended Queens College, N.C. and graduated from VPI&SU, Blacksburg. It was there she met the handsome sailor she later married and, together, moved to later own and operate Riverview Dairy Farm in Prince Edward County. Filled with a love for music and writing, she played and taught piano, as well as wrote and published a number of poems, many of them contemplating the lingering echoes of our Civil War. She held the title in her family for being "The Best Mom and Grandma in the World". She loved the beach and the sight and sound of the ocean waves. Dot is survived by her two sons, William Dudley Bass and fiance, Kristina Katayama (and her daughter, Talia) of Seattle, Wash., Joe David Bass and wife Sally, of Rice; one daughter, Elizabeth Carol "Beth" Hinde, and husband Ray, of Rice; two sisters, Marianna Harvin, and husband Larry of Tennessee, and Nancy Karam, and husband Al of Texas; five grandchildren, Lydia Bass, Morgan Hannah Bass, Jessie Bass, Kate Bass and Allison Hinde. She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband, William "Bill" Bass; and her parents, Hugh and Minnie B. Ussery of Blacksburg. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sharon Baptist Church in Green Bay, burial following at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville. BLACKSBURG, Aug. 22 ? Miss Dorothy Elizabeth Ussery, daughter of Prof. and Mrs. Hugh Dudley Ussery, became the bride of William Merritt Bass, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Melvin Bass of Richmond, today at 4 o?clock.
The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Ellison A. Smyth at the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church. The church was decorated with hydrangias, white gladioli, dahlias and candelabra. Before the ceremony Mrs. Donald Kelsey, organist, and Mrs. William Turner, violinist, presented a program of nuptial music. Dr. Craig Turner was soloist.
Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a waltz-length gown of rose point lace over tafetta. The full skirt had a bustle back of pleated nylon ruffles and her double tiered fingertip-length veil fell from a matching lace shell sprinkled with crystal beads. She carried a Bible with a white orchid and showered with stephanotis.
