John Gibbs Bassett
LOUDONVILLE – John Bassett, 55, died February 10, 2004 at the Community
Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital. Born in Monmouth County, N.J. on March 4,
1948, he was the son of the late John J. and Helen G. Bassett. He was a
graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, The Wharton School of Business at the
University of Pennsylvania (undergraduate) and the State University of New
York at Albany (master’s in business administration). In the 1970s, he was
chief executive officer of management and planning services at the Hospital
Association of New York State. He then moved to Ann Arbor, Mich. to become the
president and CEO of the Commission on Professional and Hospital Activities.
During his tenure there, he was instrumental in the national introduction of
Diagnostic Related Groups, which have become the basis for health care
reporting throughout the United States and much of the world. He was included
in several Who’s Who books and publications during this period; and lectured
throughout, then worked on healthcare and hospital issues until incapacitated by
a massive stroke at the age of 36. John Bassett is survived by his wife of 34
years, Sara, to whom he was introduced in the lobby of a movie theat
Zurich, Switzerland in 1963; a son, Ian Anderson Bassett; daughter-in-law,
Robin and two grandchildren, Michaela Riley and Caden Anderson Basse
Atlanta; brothers, Peter Q. Bassett of Atlanta, Stephen J. Bassett of Exeter,
N.H.; and a sister, Judy Wolk of Charleston, S.C. He is very close to all of
his nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. John never lost his
fascination with finance and was an avid golfer for 30 years, never improving
one iota. He was consistent. There will be an informal memorial service for
John at the Bassett home at 5 Loudon Parkway, Loudonville on Saturday,
February 14 at 3:00 p.m. All of John’s friends are invited to this celebration
of John’s life and spirit. Dress is casual. In lieu of flowers, memorial
contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Lung
Association. The family wished to extend their gratitude for the
professionalism and compassion shown by the staff of Albany Medical Center
Hospital, D4E and the Community Hospice Inn.
