      SOUTH CHATHAM - Herbert E. Bassett Sr., 81, of South Chatham and
      Augusta, Maine, died May 31 at Maine General Hospital in August
      He was the husband of the late Eleanor (Casassa) Basset
      Mr. Bassett was born in South Chatham and educated in Chatham a
      Harwich. A World War II Army veteran, he served in the 408th Ordinance
      Division as one of 5,000 soldiers protecting the Panama Canal. He earned the
      good conduct, an American Theater campaigning ribbon and a World War II Victory
      Medal, as well as a medal of appreciation from the town of Chatham. Whi
      serving in Panama, he also became a licensed sea captain.
      After the war Mr. Bassett worked as a fisherman and shell fisherman,
      and was co-owner of Bassett and Crocker Builders, which built custom home on
      the Mid and Lower Cape. The company was the first builder for Nickerson Home
      Center.
      Mr. Bassett was past president of the Cape Cod Fish and Game
      Association and the Barnstable County League of Sportsmen, and a member of the
      Nauset Rod and Gun Club and the National Rifle Association. He was a
      sportsmen's rights advocate and a collector, and was dedicated to this family.
      He had recently lived in both South Chatham and Augusta.
      Surviving are two daughters, Charlotte Summers and Becky Fuller, both
      of Chatham; two sons, Herbert E. Bassett Jr. of South Chatham and William E.
      Bassett of West Harwich; a brother Ivan Bassett of Chatham, two sisters, Norma
      Avellar of South Chatham and Lucille Milligan of East Bridgewater; 22
      grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephew
      Services were held in Chatham.
