Emily Ann Bassett, 88, of Alton, died Feb. 24, 2001, in Eldercare of
Alton. Her husband, James, preceded her in death. Surviving are a son, James
of Alton; a daughter, Mary Tallman of Gillespie; and sisters, Pearl Doolen of
Phoenix, Az., and Margaret Green of St. Petersburg, Fl. Services were in
Elias-Smith Funeral Home in Bethalto. Memorials may be given to the American
Heart Association.

Emily Bassett
Emily A. Bassett, age 88, of Alton, died at 4:35 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24,
2001, at Eldercare Nursing Home in Alton. She was born on Aug. 9, 1912, in
Alma, the daughter of the late Orie and Cordelia Pearson Green. She married
James Bassett Sr. on Nov. 17, 1945, in Bethalto. He preceded her in death on
Dec. 14, 1997. She is survived by a daughter: Mary Tallman of Gillespie; a
son; James Bassett Jr. and wife, Pat of Alton; four grandchildren: Susan Ness
of Germany, Dawn Benenze of Gillespie, Michael Bassett and wife, Gina of
Brighton, and Dena Futch and husband, Buddy of Florida; two step-
grandchildren: Tom Silveus of Bethalto and Michelle Wells and husband, Brad of
Bethalto; three great-grandchildren: twins Andrew and Nathaniel Newss a
Jessica Bassett; a step-great-grandson: Tommy Silveus; two sisters: Pea
Doolen of Phoenix, Ariz., and Margaret Green of St. Petersburgh, Fla.; and
many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was
preceded in death by three brothers: Herbert, Eli and Clyde Green. Mrs.
Bassett was a charter member of the First Baptist Church of Bethalto, teaching
Bible school and a member of the Senior Citizens Group at the church.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, at Elias-Smith
Funeral Home in Bethalto. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday,
March 2, at the funeral home with Rev. Charles West officiating. Interment
will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto. Memorials are suggested to
the American Heart Association.
