MIDDLEBURY - Harriett Davis Greene, 76, died March 27, 2002, in Middlebury.
She was born Sept. 22, 1925, the daughter of Charles and Ruth (Davis) Greene
of Bristol, Conn.
She graduated from high school in Bristol, and attended Smith College. She
later studied music at the Hartford School of Music and Bennington College.
She married Preston Bassett Jr. in 1944. They later divorced. She then married
Maurice Ewing, who predeceased her. After Mr. Ewing's death she married George
Doey, who also predeceased her.
She worked at Columbia University's Lamont Geological Observatory for 20
years. She also worked with her husband, Professor Ewing, as his assistant at
Lamont and later as manager of Galveston Geophysical Institute.
She was a member of St. Stephen's Church in Middlebury and the Middlebu
Garden Club.
She enjoyed music and was an accomplished pianist.
Survivors include a daughter, Ellen Meadors of Lincoln, Mass.; a son, the Rev.
Paul Bassett of Cincinnati; a sister, Martha Ullery of Tucson, Ariz.; a
stepdaughter, Colleen (Doey) Thomas of Derbyshire, England; her companion,
Arthur Smith; and five granddaughters.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Martha Bassett (Geacintov), in 197
The memorial service will be held Saturday, April 20, at 3 p.m. at St.
Stephen's Episcopal Church in Middlebury. A reception will follow at the
Middlebury Community House.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. George Russian Orthodox Church,
4905 Myrtle Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45242, St. Stephen's Church in Middlebury,
or the Addison Community Action Group.
