Gladys M. Richardson
SHELBURNE – Gladys M. Richardson, 81, of Bardwells Ferry Road, died Monday,
March 9, 2009 at Buckley Health Center in Greenfield after a short illness.
She was born July 11, 1927, in Shelburne, the daughter of William and Clarissa
Bassett.
She was married to Donald F. Richardson in 1947. He predeceased her on March
16, 2002.
She leaves her three beloved children: her son, Thomas E. and his wife Janet;
her son, John W., and her daughter, Connie M. Richardson along with Connie’s
husband, Henry Burt, all of Shelburne. She also leaves several grandchildren
and great-grandchildren, whom she enjoyed spending time with. She also leaves
her sister, Gertrude of Stanford, Conn.; her sister, Dorothy Gilbert of
Plainfield, and her sister-in-law, Mary Bassett of Shelburne Falls, and many
nieces and nephews.
Gladys was raised on her family farm in Shelburne and loved helping her father
tend the farm. During that time she attended and graduated from Arms Academy
in Shelburne Falls.
She was a World War II volunteer at the look out post for planes in Shelburne
and reported her sightings.
She met her husband, Donald, when he returned from the war and they married
and built their home together, where she enjoyed raising her three children.
She was a member of the Shelburne Congregational Church and in years pa
helped teach Sunday School classes and played the piano.
Gladys loved being at home in Shelburne with her children and grandchildren
and in the recent year her great-grandchildren. She enjoyed reading and
watching the many birds that came to the feeders in the yard. She especially
enjoyed her cat, Snooky.
There are no calling hours. The family is planning a memorial service at a
later date.
