Floyd L. Harrell Dies at Hospital
Services Wednesday for County Educator
One of Shelby county's most widely known schoolmen has died at the
Major hospital here following an extended illness. He is Floyd L. Harrell,
aged 42, whose death occurred Sunday at 11:55 p.m.
Mr. Harrell was a resident of Brandywine township and was bo
Moral township on October 2, 1902, the son of the late Silas H. and Emma D.
Lee Harrell. On July 26, 1928, he was united in marriage to Mildred L.
Bassett, who survives with two children, Linda Lee, age five, and James
Jackson, age three. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Paul Robinson, of
VanBuren township, and Mrs. Ernest Bush, of Brandywine township, and a
brother, O.C. Harrell, of Moral township.
Mr. Harrell had been a school teacher for 24 years, 23 of which were
spent in the Moral, Boggstown and Fairland schools. He was principal of the
Fairland school at the time he was granted a leave of absence because of ill
health. He also had taught at Argus. He was a graduate of the Fairland high
school. He received his B.A. degree from Ball State Teachers College and his
M.S. degree from Indiana University.
He had served on the local war price and rationing board. He was
active in Boy Scout activities of the Fairland community, having served as an
advisory committee member. Mr. Harrell was a past master of Sugar Creek Lodge
No. 279 of the Masonic order and was the first past master president of the
lodge. He also was a member of the Fairland Order of Eastern Star and of the
Fairland Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at the late home on Wednesday
afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, with the Rev. James Cox, pastor of the Fairland
Methodist Church, and Dr. Charles A. Bowler, pastor of the local First
Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial in charge of Charles M. Ewing will be
made in Forest Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the late home after 7:00
o'clock tonight.
Honorary pallbearers will be city and county school principals and
Thomas Fogarty, superintendent of county schools, and W. F. Loper, Shelbyville
school superintendent.
Active pallbearers are George Lee, Earl Tolen, Fred Tucke
Guild, Floyd Bradley, Roy Tucker, Edgar Barger and Arthur Tucker.
