AIRPLANE LANDS HERE
An airplane landed in the Mattke field near Woodruff last Sunday
attracting a large crowd of people from the country around. The machine was
forced to land because of a shortage of oil. The occupants were on their way
from Chicago to Ironwood and had planned on landing at Mercer. They resumed
their journey Monday morning.
In 1930, Francis Bassett, the son of B.O. Bassett, became the first
Minocqua resident to fly an airplane. Arriving from Wisconsin Rapids where he
learned how to fly, his first flight over Minocqua on August 1, 1930, created
a good deal of excitement. The TIMES editor wrote: "Interested spectato
stood on the streets listening and watching for his approach. When the burr of
the plane was heard, excitement reigned, and necks were craned towards the
blue, clear skies. A crowd congregated at the Standard Oil airport, seven miles
north of here, to welcome the aviator." Bassett went on to become an a
transport pilot, but received serious injuries in a crash in the early 1930's
and gave up the occupation for the terra firma of a greenhouse business.
