- Lloyd (known to family as "Buster" and to friends as "Curly") started out as a farmer on land adjoining that of his parents in Armstrong County, Texas. He sold the farm in 1951 and eventually became a jeweler and registered
gemologist.

Lloyd Milton Bassett Jr., 84, of Amarillo, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2001,
in Midland.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Pioneer Chapel at N.S. Griggs &
Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd., with the Rev. Jim Shelburne,
pastor of Washington Avenue Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in
Llano Cemetery.
Mr. Bassett was born in Armstrong County and was a longtime resident
of Amarillo, where he graduated from Amarillo High School. During World War
II, he served with the Army Air Corps, participated in the Ploesti Air Raid
and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
A registered gemologist, he worked as a jeweler for Wagner's, Duncan
and Boyd Jewelers. He was a volunteer at the Veteran's Administration Hospital
and was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Washington Avenue Christian Church.
He married Patricia Hudson in 1938 at Odessa. She died in 1989. He
married Laverne Wilhelm in 1990 at Amarillo.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Darla Mueller of Midland; two
stepsons, Don Middleton of Granbury and Gary Wilhelm of Grand Prairie; three
grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.
The family will be at 3308 E. 12th and suggests memorials be to
Veterans Affairs Hospital; or Washington Avenue Christian Church.
