- Charles Bassett Dies in Baltimore

Was Husband of Daughter of Late Clara Aldrich Cooley
Word has been received in this city of the death on Thursday in Baltimore of Charles Wesley Bassett, husband of Mary Cooley Bassett, daughter of the late Judge D.N. Cooley and Clara Aldrich Cooley.
Mr. Bassett was a prominent railroad man, having been connected with the Baltimore and Ohio railroad practically throughout his career. He was for many years general passenger agent in Pittsburgh of the Pittsburgh and Western railroad, which afterward became a part of the Baltimore and Ohio system. When Mr. Bassett was transferred to Baltimore he became general passenger agent of that road.
He retired some years ago on account of his failing health, but continued to keep up his interests and friendships in the railroad world. Few railroad officials were better known or more highly respected in Pittsburgh and Baltimore than Mr. Bassett.
Mr. Bassett was widely known and honored in Masonic circles. The private interment which will take place this afternoon in the Cooley family lot in Linwood cemetery will be under the auspices of an honorary escort from Siloam commandery.
The deceased is survived by his widow, Mary Cooley Bassett, a daughter, Mary Jeanette Bassett, Baltimore, and a brother residing in Winters, California.
Eastern Shore Property Owner Dies, 1926
Charles Wesley Bassett, Assistant Traffic Manager of the B.&O. R.R., died at his winter home, 2947 St. Paul Street, Baltimore, on April 22nd. For the past eighteen summers Mr. Bassett's family has lived on the Miles River near Royal Oak.
Mr. Bassett was the son of Dr. Charles Bassett and Eliza Sawyer of Litchfield, Connecticut. He was born in Brinsfield, Ohio. In 1870 he began his career as a railroad man, and was employed with the Atlantic and Great Western R.R. In 1876 he was promoted from railway operator to ticket agent and stationed in Georgetown, Ohio. Several years later he was made Tourist Agent of the Erie, and the Pittsburg and Lake Erie. In 1884 he gave up this position to accept the appointment of General Passenger and Ticket Agent of the Pittsburg, Cleveland and Toledo R.R. Some time later he moved to Alleghany, Pennsylvania. He served there until 1902, when he was moved to Baltimore.
Mr. Bassett had been in poor health for over ten years, but his death came as a great shock to his family. He is survived by his widow, Mary Cooley Bassett, one daughter, Mary Jeanette, and one brother, W.H. Bassett of California.
The funeral services were held in Baltimore at his home, Dr. Harris E. Kirk officiating. The interment in Dubuque, Iowa, was under the auspices of St. John's Commandery, Knights Templars.

Mr. C.W. Bassett Seriously Ill
Mr. Charles W. Bassett, general passenger agent of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad lines east of the Ohio River is seriously ill in a hospital in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. He left Baltimore several days ago on a business trip West.
A telegram received yesterday at the office of Manager of Passenger Traffic D.B. Martin stated that Mr. Bassett was taken suddenly ill, with acute stomach trouble. He consulted his physician in Pittsburg, who found it necessary to perform an operation to remove an abscess from his stomach. It is thought that he will be in the hospital for at least several weeks. Mr. Bassett was recently appointed general passenger agent to fill the vacancy caused by the death of James M. Schryver.
