Dorothy Bassett
Alaska resident Dorothy M. Bassett, 67, died Sept. 14 of cancer at Our Lady of
Compassion Care Center. A service will be held at noon Thursday at First
Baptist Church with the Rev. Marvin Owen officiating. Burial will follow at
Fort Richardson National Cemetery, near her late husband, Neil. A visitation
will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, downtown.
Mrs. Bassett was born April 24, 1925, to Martin Dauer and Clara Kempker Dauer
in Chamois, Mo. She left Missouri at the end of World War II and mov
California with her first husband. After 20 years, the marriage ende
support herself and her four daughters, she took a number of different jobs
while attending night school.
In 1968, she joined the Customs Service, U.S. Treasury, in Oakland, Calif., as
a mail specialist. She took a temporary assignment to Anchorage in 1972 with
the idea she'd stay for two years before returning to California. Her plans
changed after she met Neil Bassett at a local square dancing club. They
married May 12, 1974, and her two-year hitch stretched to 20. Her second
marriage ended with Mr. Bassett's death in 1990 after 16 years together,
according to a family member.
After leaving the Customs Service in in 1974, she devoted the next four years
to her husband and his son, whom Dorothy adopted. In 1978, she re-entered the
work force and accepted a position with the Department of Natural Resources.
She retired in 1983.
Mrs. Bassett was committed to community service and was an active member in
many organizations including the Alaska Association of Petroleum Landme
Birthright, the Girl's Club, the Homemaker's Club, Ladies of the Shrines
(Waheed Court #81), Mable T. Caverly Senior Center, Quota Club and Right to
Life. She was a founding member of Alaska Right to Life. She held every office
in the organization and was president in 1975=76. She served as the
representative to the National Right to Life Committee in Washington, D.C.
She was a Christian and a member of the First Baptist Church of Anchorage. Her
family said, "Dorothy took particular delight in spending time with her
grandchildren." Mrs. Bassett is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Frank
and Stephanie; her daughters by her first marriage, Emaline French, Jan
Brown, Gail Bills and Sandra and John Duffy of Hawaii; 13 grandchildren and
one great-grandchild.
