Harold B. Bass
Harold B. Bass, 78, Odessa, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, at Saint Joseph Health Center in Kansas City.
Mr. Bass was born July 18, 1925, in Knob Noster, Mo., to Elbe and Geneva Lucille (Calvert) Bass. He married Clara Jean Cahill on July 25, 1946. He worked for the Ford Claycomo Plant for 30 years, retiring in 1982, transferring there from the Kansas City Manchester Ford Plant. He was a retired member of United Auto Workers Local 249, Kansas City, where he worked on the assembly line, in maintenance and as a toll driver. He then operated Harold's Mowing Co. for several years. He was a 1943 graduate of Howard High School, Warrensburg, Mo., and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II while stationed at Pearl Harbor. He served from Dec. 5, 1943, until his honorable discharge on April 5, 1946. He was a life member of the Odessa Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5675 and a member of the American Legion. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He was a member and deacon of the Second Missionary Baptist Church in Odessa for more than 50 years, where he served as assistant treasurer, and for more than 40 years, as chairman of the Deacon Board. He was preceded in death by a son, Norman Eugene Bass, on Sept. 7, 1970, his parents and two brothers, Kenneth Earl and Delmar Dean Bass.
His survivors include his wife of 57 years, Clara J. Bass, of the home; four children, Arluster Haynes and husband, Edward, Lexington, and Harold W. Bass, Dian Bass and Rev. Kenneth D. Bass and wife, Cynthia "Cindy", all of Odessa; eight brothers and sisters and their spouses, Raymond and Idella Bass, Knob Noster, Joseph and Sylvia Bass, Kansas City, Juanita and Clyde Benton and Betty and Travis Benton, Higginsville, Lawrence and Dorothy Bass, Warrensburg, Wayne and Marie Bass, Odessa, and Mary Steward and Janet and Elbert Winters, Knob Noster; 10 grandchildren, Charles Bass, Kimberly Strickland, Harold W. Bass Jr., Chad Bass, Melanie Harris, Albert Bass, Jennifer Millentree, and Scott, Norman and Vanessa Bass; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Second Missionary Baptist Church, Odessa. Burial will be in Odessa Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Odessa Military Honors Team. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church building fund.
