Thomas L. Bass
From an early age Thomas L. Bass had made his won way in the world, possessing that self-reliant spirit which spurs the individual ever onward and upward, and the Exercise of effort had developed his latent powers and talents. He now acts as assistant district manager of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company at Columbus, Georgia. He was born May 13, 1890, Lee county, Georgia, and his parents, Andrew H. and Eunice (Cheek) Bass, were also natives of that county, in which their lives were spent. The father engaged in merchandising and also followed the occupation of farming. He passed away in September, 1922, and the mother?s demise occurred in 1906. Three sons were born to them: Thomas Ll, Elmo J. and Marvin F., the two latter being resident of Atlanta.
For three years Thomas L. Bass attended the common schools of his native county and then went to Macon, Georgia, arriving there penniless. He was at that time eleven years of age and obtained work in the department store of The Dannenberg Company, in which he spent seven years. He started as office boy and was rapidly advanced, eventually becoming assistant cashier. He was next traveling salesman for the wholesale shoe house of A.W. Tebcastle & Company and a year later was made floor manager for W.A. Doudy & Company of Macon. He remained with that firm for four years and on the expiration of that period became a salesman for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. He filled that position for four years and then resigned, having decided to venture in business for himself. He engaged in merchandising on a brokerage basis, establishing his headquarter at Macon, afterward opened a branch at Lagrange, Georgia, prospering in his undertakings. After seven years he reentered the employ of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, with which he has since been connected. He went to Atlanta on the 23d of April, 1923, as agent and his work in that connection won him promotion to the position of assistant district manager. In January, 1924, Mr. Bass was transferred as assistant district manager of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company to Columbus, Georgia. He combines a through understanding of the life insurance business with executive force and good judgment and is one of the most capable and successful representatives of the corporation which he serves, bending every effort to promote its interests.
On September 17, 1916, Mr. bass was married in Atlanta to Miss Helen Reeves, a daughter of Wiley A. Reeves, of Lagrange, a retired capitalist. Mr. and Mrs. Bass have three children: Helen Evelyn, born September 16, 1917, and a native of Lagrange; Ann Virginia, who was born march 2, 1919; and Thomas L. jr., born November 2, 1922.
Mr. Bass is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and one of tis stewards.
