Obituaries - Arthur Bassett, Ex-Armstrong Exec, 85 Di
Arthur Whiting Bassett, 85, retired Armstrong World Industries chief
power engineer, died Friday night at Landis Homes Retirement Community, Lititz
R3, after a long illness.
The husband of Helen G. Hall Bassett, he had lived at 1565 Mission
Road.
In 1962, he retired as chief power engineer with Armstrong World
Industries where he trained scores of top engineers.
He worked for the company from 1929 to 1962, starting as chi
power and heating section of the Lancaster floor plant.
Bassett was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, where he had
taught Sunday school for 15 years and served as a vestryman for 18 years. A
30-year member of the church property committee, he was chairman of that group
for 20 years.
A World War I veteran, Bassett served in the Navy after being trained
at Stevens Institute of Technology.
He was a member and past president of the Lancaster Chapter of the
American Business Club. Bassett held membership in the Lancaster Lod
Perfection, the 14th Degree Harrisburg Consistory, the 32nd Degree Zembo
Temple, the American Association of Retired Persons and the Pennsylvania
Society of Professional Engineers.
Educated in Greenfield, Mass., schools, he earned a bachelor of
science degree in engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1920.
Born in Heath, Mass., he was the son of the late Rollin and Emma
Howard Bassett and a Lancaster resident since 1929.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by, a son, Dr. Donald R.
Bassett, Durham, NH; two daughters, Betty B., wife of Dr. Norman L. Miller,
Lancaster, and Marian D. Brenner, New Britain, Conn.; 10 grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.
