Negroes Drown While Fishing in Creek Sunday
Bodies of Herbert and John H. Bass Recovered Before Noon Today
Herbert Bass, 27, and John Henry Bass, 19 negroes, sons of Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Bass, living west of Sedalia, were drowned in Muddy Creek, where they had gone fishing, Sunday, and their bodies were recovered shortly before noon Monday.
The two brothers left home about 11 o?clock Sunday to go to the creek, at a point about seven miles west of Sedalia. They took old clothes which they intended wearing while fishing. When the hour became late Sunday night and they had not returned their relatives became worried, and went to look for them. They found their clothes they had worn, and which they expected to change, on the bank, and immediately they feared something had happened.
When they failed to return home all night Mrs. John Henry Bass, their mother, went to the home of James R. Card, on route 3, at 5 o?clock Monday morning, and told them she believed something was wrong. A searching party was formed, the sheriff?s office notified, and it was not until several hours later that the bodies were found in the creek, about 150 feet from the Dresden bridge, about three-quarters of a mile from the place their clothes had been left. The attention of the searchers was directed to this place by E.R. Hayes, who found a hat near there, which belonged to one of the negroes.
Herbert Bass is married and leaves a family.
The bodies were taken to the Parker undertaking establishment at LaMonte. Dr. W.T. Bishop, coroner, who was called, stated he did not believe an inquest was necessary, as death was due to accidental drowning.
