- Mrs. W. W. Bassett Dies; Rites Tuesday
Mrs. W. W. (Angella) Bassett, member of a family that came here in
Aberdeen's early days and a leader in the Brown County Territorial Pioneers
organization, died Sunday at St. Luke's Hospital.
She was the daughter of H.C. Jewett Sr., co-founder of a wholesale
business in Aberdeen in the 1880s.
Mrs. Bassett, 81, was selected as Aberdeen's First Lady in 1950 by the
Beta Sigma Phi sorority.
Services will be Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church
with Rt. Rev. Msgr, P.C. Conway officiating. Burial will be in Riverside
Cemetery.
Rosary will be said Monday at 8:15 p.m. at Gates Funeral Hom
Mrs. Bassett was born Jan. 8, 1887, at Wheeling , W. Va., while the
Jewett family was visiting relatives there. She returned there to attend
school and was graduated from Mount De Chantal Academy at Wheeling and
attended Miss Hopkins Finishing School in New York City. Later she studied
opera under Oscar Sanger in New York City.
She was married to W.W. Bassett in Aberdeen Oct. 18, 1911. Mr. Bassett
died in 1934.
Mrs. Bassett was a member of Sacred Heart Church and of Band No. 6
Sacred Heart Parish Rosary Society. She was a charter member and past
president of St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary. She had also served as a member of
the executive committee planning the Aberdeen Diamond Jubile
Other activities included membership and offices in the Catholic Study
Group, Arts Club, City Federation of Philanthropic committee, American Legion
Auxiliary, Red Cross and Junior Red Cross, Nurses Aides, Brown County Chapter
National Foundation of Infantile Paralysis, Girl Scout Council, Monday Musical
club, Aberdeen Civic Music Assn., and Aberdeen Country Club. She also served
for many years as Democratic precinct woman.
She is survived by two sons and two daughters, Mrs. Robert L. (Mary)
Johnson, Aberdeen; John J. Bassett, Rumson, N.J.; Mrs. J.A. (Katherine
Schroth, Winchester, Va.; and Charles W. Bassett, Merion Station, Pa. A
sister, Mrs. Marie Jewett Bickelhaupt, Rochester, N.Y., also survive
Mrs. Bassett lived at 1104 N. Lincoln.
