      Henry K. Bassett, Obituary

H.K. Bassett, apparently in the best health he had enjoyed in a long time and
while assisting his son repair fences, Monday afternoon, and as he worked and
joked, Henry K. Bassett of Independence remarked that he felt as though he
were paralyzed. His son Milford assisted him in a wagon and took him to the
house where it was discovered he had suffered a shock. He retained
consciousness from the time he was stricken about 6 p.m., until about 8 p.m.,
when he apparently fell into a peaceful sleep from which he never awakened.
      Death came about p.m.

After being stricken Mr. Bassett did not complain of feeling bad, simply a
queer helplessness. His death came as a great shock to his family and h
multitude of friends. He was widely known as a man of sterling integrity. For
years he served the township as assessor and at the time of his death he was
Justice of the Peace. He was a man who was respected in public life as one
averse to discord and was always thoughtful and conservative.

Henry K. Bassett was born in the Township of Independence over 67 years ago.
He was married November 7, 1877 to Miss Esther Auston, who with two son
Charles of Chicago and Milford C., at home, survive. A son John Chandler died
at the age of 8 years. Two brothers, T.E. Bassett of Oswego and T.R. Bassett
of Albany, also a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Carpenter of Florence, So. Carolina,
      also survive him.

The funeral services will be held from the Seventh Day Baptist churc
which he was a member, this Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock with interment in
the family plot in the Independence Cemetery. Rev. Walter L. Greene
      officiating.

Deceased was a member of Whitesville Maccabee lodge.
