Death of Wyatt M. Bassett
Former Resident of the Town Passes Away in New York
Word was received last night of the sudden death of Wyatt M. Bassett in New York city, Monday. Mr. Bassett was born in Ware, June 19, 1845. He was educated in the public schools, and on October 11, 1861, at the age of 16, he enlisted in Co. D of the 31st Massachusetts infantry. In the following September he was discharged on account of disability. He re-enlisted on July 20, 1864, for 100 days in Co. F. of the 60th Massachusetts infantry, and was honorably discharged at the expiration of his term of service. He returned to Ware and served as assistant postmaster for several years. He then went to Amherst as freight agent on the Central Vermont railroad. He was transferred to Norwich, Ct., and after staying there a few years was promoted to the office of general freight agent in New York. Although Mr. Bassett had not been a resident of Ware for a number of years, he was well known to many of the town?s oldest citizens. He is survived by one brother, Andrew L. Bassett of New York, and one sister, Nellie, in the middle West. The funeral will be held in New York this afternoon and the body will be brought to Ware for burial to-morrow.

Funeral services will be held at 8 o?clock tomorrow night for Wyatt M. Bassett, a veteran of the Civil War, who died Monday in the arms of Policeman Killian, of the West Twenty-third street station, Manhattan, at Twenty-third street and Fifth avenue, Manhattan. Mr. Bassett was seventy-four years old and lived at 707 Carroll street, where the services will be held. The remains will be taken to Ware, Mass., for interment at the local cemetery. Mr. Bassett was employed by the Bay State Line as a solicitor. He had an office at 6 East Twenty-third street, Manhattan. He was the husband of Annie Hayden Bassett, who survives him.
