Joyce Bass
Joyce Bass, a longtime San Leandro resident, died peacefully on July 16 at the age of 95, following two years in hospice. Joyce was born in San Francisco, the younger of two children born to Joseph Kern and Eleanor Gaston. Joyce's only sibling was an older brother, David, who died unexpectedly in 1960, a lost that was deeply felt. Joyce met the love of her life, Gene, at church. They married in 1951 and moved east to Baltimore for Gene to attend Army Intelligence school. After Gene completed his military service, they settled back in the Bay Area, where they raised their children, Jan & Ed. Joyce worked at Capwells in Oakland in the late 1940s and early 1950s and at Hutzlers in Baltimore, also in the early 1950s. After her daughter was born, Joyce stayed home to help raise their children. During this time, Joyce became very active in PTA. She served as President of the PTA more than once and was awarded the honor of being a Lifetime PTA President by the San Leandro High School PTA. After her children were grown, Joyce volunteered at a San Leandro hospice program in their office. In 1976, Joyce went back to work for Emporium/Capwells. She worked in credit and collections for 15 years, retiring in 1992. Joyce was very active in church throughout her life. While her children were young, she helped lead the youth group, taught Sunday School and helped with vacation Bible school. For many years, Joyce would read through the entire Bible every year. In her retirement, Joyce served as a church pianist, lay pastor/preacher and church treasurer. Along with her husband Gene, Joyce was active in the Baptist Peace Fellowship, attending Peace Camp annually for many years. Joyce is predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Gene; her parents, Joseph and Eleanor; and her brother, David. Joyce is survived by her daughter, Jan (David) and her son, Ed (Patti); and her only grandson, Kern. Joyce is also survived by several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 26th at 2 pm at Eden United Church of Christ at 21455 Birch Street, Hayward.
