G. Russell Bass
G. Russell Bass, 96, of Westhampton, died Thursday in a Leeds, Northampton nursing home. He was an test inspector at the former Westinghouse Electric Corp. plant in Springfield and retired in 1959. He was later self employed in small electrical appliance repair. He also operated Pine Island Dairy Goat Farm in Westhampton for 12 years and the former Riverdale Cash Market in West Springfield. He retired in 1986. Born in West Medford, he attended Mount Vernon Academy in New York, and Cook Academy in Watkins Glen, N.Y. He moved to Westhampton in 1936. He was a 49-year member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Northampton's Florence section and former church assistant treasurerr and a Sabbath School superintendent and teacher. He played clarinet in the former Easthampton Legion Band and was clarinet soloist in various churches. He was Southampton's oldest resident, and received the the town's Gold Cane in 1991. He as also a member of the Westhampton Council on Aging. His wife, the former May Kibbe, died in 1992. He leaves two sons, Rev. Leroy C. of Washington Island, Wis., and Russell B. of Kelso, Wash.; four daughters, Shirley M. Fuller of Troy, N.H., M. Jewell Horrocks and F. June Nelson of Orange and Lillian Baxter of Graniteville, Vt.; 19 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be Tuesday morning the church, with burial in the Center Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Mitchell Funeral Home of Easthampton is in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to the church, 35 North Main St., Florence, 01060.
