Obituary
Orrin Delos Bassett
Orrin Delos Bassett, for over thirty years one of the most faithful of
Rome’s mail carriers, passed away at his home in that city at 2:15 a.m.
Saturday, Jan. 4. He had been ill for several weeks, pneumonia being the
direct cause of death.
He was born in Burlington Flats, Otsego county, May 18, 1847. When a
child his family moved to Leonardsville and there he lived until he moved to
Rome 35 years ago. He enlisted in the Civil war Sept. 3, 1864, as a private in
Co. D, 189th regiment, N.Y. Infantry, and was mustered in at Otsego. After the
war, Mr. Bassett returned to Leonardsville.
At Edmeston, October 15, 1873, he married Miss Matie Brand, who
survives; also two daughters, Mrs. Bert Johnson and Miss Robie Brand Bassett;
and two grandsons, Brand T. and Howard L. Johnson, all of Rome; also one
sister, Mrs. Elwin Sutherland of Oneonta, and two brothers; Clark M., of
Brookfield, and Albert H. of Leonardsville.
