Billy Gene Bass
Billy Gene Bass, 91, of McAlester, passed away at his home on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024. A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the All Saint's Episcopal Church in McAlester, with Mother Janie Koch officiating. Military honors will be provided by the U. S. Air Force.
Gene Bass was born on Jan. 19, 1933 in Checotah to Elgie Lee Bass and Alma Ruth (Jernigan) Bass. He grew up in Muskogee and graduated from Muskogee High School. He married his first wife, Sue Hall, in 1952 in Stigler, and they had 3 children, Jimmy Gene Bass, Janice Lynn Bass and Jay Evan "Pete" Bass.
Gene joined the Air Force in1953 and served his country for the next 20 years in six different Air Force bases in the states, the Philippines, Japan, and Germany. He moved to McAlester in 1975, where he worked for the state of Oklahoma as a tax auditor. He married Betty Bass in 1977 and was a devoted husband and stepfather to her three sons, Jeff Belote, James Belote, and Greg Belote. Gene deeply loved his wife, Betty. Their favorite thing was vacationing at the Hale Koa Hotel in Hawaii, which they did every year for the last 22 years, until Betty passed away.
Gene was an avid golfer and knew how to fix anything. A friendly, outgoing, involved, caring, and loving man, Gene never knew a stranger. He loved golfing weekly, almost daily, with his golf buddies. He also loved Sooner football, basketball and softball games, and watching Thunder basketball. He also enjoyed going fishing, and was crazy about his beloved Yorkie, Petey. Gene was deeply valued and respected for his dedication to KiBois Community Action, where he proudly served as their chairman of the Board for 36 years. Most of all, he loved being with his family, hosting holiday meals, and especially spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Gene loved attending their sporting events, dance recitals, horse shows and graduations. He was a loving, supportive husband, father, step-father, grandfather, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who were lucky enough to have had him in their lives.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; two of his sons, Pete and Jim Bass; his parents, Elgie and Ruth Bass; and a brother, Bob Bass. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Mike Bracken of Stigler; daughter-in-law, Shelli Bass of Stigler; sons Jeff Belote of McAlester, James and Susan Belote of Edmond, and Greg Belote of Edmond; grandchildren, Kent and Leah Bracken, Rusty and Sandy Bracken, Jaeden and Austin Drewry, Lakin and Lynnsey Bass, Tuesdae Riley and Mike Winterstine, Kristen Belote, Taylor Belote, Jennifer Belote, Collin Belote, Gracie and Zack Guillemette, Elleyt and Kris Hari; and 13 great grandchildren.
