W. Duane Bass, 86, passed away from cancer on Monday, July 18, 2011. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 22, at Grace Lutheran Church with visitation one hour prior to the services. Burial will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, at the Wilson Cemetery in Independence, Iowa.
Duane was born August 4, 1924, in McGregor, IA, to Arthur W. and Erma B. (Hilling) Bass. He graduated from Independence High School in 1942.
On December 27, 1943, in Independence, Duane married Helen O'Brian and they farmed east of Independence until 1953, when they moved to Des Moines. Duane was self-employed in sales and service for many years. In 1973, he and Helen moved to Camdenton, MO to own and operate the Cedar Green Resort on the Lake of the Ozarks until 1982, retiring by the lake. They returned to the Des Moines area in 1997 to be close to family.
Duane is survived by his son, Larry (Diane) Bass; daughters, Carla (William) Black of Osceola, and Judy (Rollie) Bramhall of Windsor Heights; grandchildren, David Bass, Darren Bass, Brenda Eggleston, Lisa Curtis, Cheri Jimenez, Debora Black, Jonathan Bramhall and Benjamin Bramhall; five great-granddaughters, three great-grandsons; one sister, Dolores Dlouhy of Waterloo; two brothers, Daryle Bass of Alamo, TX and Doyle Bass of Cedar Falls; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen Bass; daughter Carol Ann; and infant twin brothers.
