Emma Carolina Jackson Bassett
Mrs. henry Frankland Bassett (Emma Caroline Jackson), of Taunton, Mass., elected to Colonial membership 24 June 1930, was born in Taunton 14 April 1853, the daughter of Elisha Tucker and Caroline Keith (Fobes) Jackson, and died in Hyannis, Mass., 10 Sept. 1940.
On the paternal side, Mrs. Bassett was descended from James Jackson, of Middleboro, Mass., her grandfather, the earliest recorded member of that family, but on her mother?s side from Francis Cooke of the Mayflower party.
She attended the public schools of Taunton, graduating as valedictorian with the class of 1871 in the high school and entered Vassar College with the class of 1876, illness preventing her from completing the course.
She married, 16 Jun 1880, Henry Frankland Bassett, a descendant of John Alden, Myles Standish and henry Sampson, of the Mayflower, who was a former resident of Taunton, and the couple made their home in Appleton, Wis. They returned to Taunton in July 1884 where Mr. Bassett became president of the Taunton-New Bedford Copper Co., passing away 8 Oct. 1927.
Mrs. Bassett devoted much of her energy during her later years to charitable work. She was treasurer of the Taunton Visiting Nurse Association from 1906 and president of the Morton Hospital Aid Society from 1912, a director in the Taunton Female Charitable Association, on the advisory board, and some time president, of the Taunton Girls? Club, and was a generous contributor to these institutions. She was also a life member of the Old Colony Historical Society of Taunton and its constituent the Jean Gordon Jackson Guild.
She was the mother of four sons: Henry F. Bassett J., and William Bassett, who died young; and Edmund Bassett and Francis J. Bassett, who survived.
