Lela Christine Hogan Bass
Lela Christine Hogan Bass, 94, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2018 in Southland Health Care Center of Lufkin. Mrs. Bass was born June 2, 1923 in Center, to Henry Arnold Hogan and Naomi Wilson Hogan. She lived her life as a wife, mother, and homemaker. She loved spending time with her daughters, sons, and grandchildren, being outdoors, and she loved to travel. One of her most memorable trips was to New York for her grandson's wedding. She enjoyed many hobbies including quilting, cooking, sewing, gardening, and reading. She read her bible from cover to cover every year. She was a member of First Apostolic Church of Burke, Texas. Mrs. Bass is survived by her sons, Carl Davis Bass of Houston, Curtis Lee Bass and wife, Lynette, of Houston, and Steven Wilson Bass of Burke; daughters, Jerry Ann Bailey of Center, Mary Lois Lee and husband, Dean, of Lufkin, Diane Vines of Brookeland, Texas, Dorothy Laverne Ellis and husband, Sam, of Brookeland, and Debra Kay Mettlen and husband, Paul, of Burke, Texas; brother, Henry Wilson Hogan of Fort Worth, Texas; sisters, Dorothy Jeane Chaney of Hemphill, Texas and Patsy Ruth Vrooman of Hemphill, Texas; 19 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Naomi Hogan; her husband, Woodrow Wilson Bass; daughter, Mary Mozell Bass; granddaughters, Tera Sloan, Renae Bass, and Ashley Ener; great grandson, Anthony Bass; sons-in-law, George Bailey and Ronny Vines; and sisters-in-law, Ilene Bass and Linda Bass. Visitation for Mrs. Bass will be from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2018 at Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr St., Hemphill, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2018 in Starr Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Paul Mettlen and Pastor Rudolph Hennigan officiating. Burial will follow services in Hemphill Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are David Wade Bass, Jimmy Sloan, Vincent Sloan, Foie Paul Armstrong, II., Harold Clark, Brandon Bass, Dustin Bass, and Paul Mettlen, Jr. Honorary Pallbearers are Dwayne Thornhill, Timothy Reeves, Gary Fanning, Bennie Hogan, Wayne Brown, and Johnny Hogan. The family of Mrs. Bass would like to send a special thank you to Hospice in the Pines and would request that any memorial contributions be made to Hospice in the Pines or First Apostolic Church of Burke, Texas.
